5 Series 535d non-M-Sport?
Discussion
You should have a go in them before you make your mind up.
We have an A4 S Line that supposedly rides very badly. In reality, the ride is a bit form but the seats more than make up for it so it is a very comfortable car.
As for the M Sport BMWs, make sure you try one without run flat tyres. And yes, the E60 535d came in SE spec and the M Sport suspension deletion was also an option.

I have tried the 535d M Sport, A6 (2.0TDi as 3.0 wasnt available to test) but havent yet tried the Merc...irrationally dont fancy it.
The BMW was pretty stiff I thought and the Audi about the same although I'm not sure if there will be a difference due to the heavier engine?
Any experience of the Merc out there?

Yes, 3 years of the lesser engine E220 cdi, the E320 cdi engine is very highly regarded, goes like a train, reliable, and sounds quite nice for a diesel IMO.My E Class had the avantgarde spec which comes with slightly stiffer suspension, I fitted larger 18" alloy wheels with lower profile tyres, and it still offered a wonderful ride and soaked up potholes and uneven roads very well, better than my new C Class with the same size wheels on - The E Class is not the last thing in cornering ability but you can't have everything!

Not sure if it applies with the 535d but a lot of Beemers with the top spec engines come with M Sport suspension regardless of whether they're actually an M Sport or not, for example the 335i comes as SE or M Sport but has the same suspension for both.
Not quite right, sports suspension and M Sport suspension always were different (although it wouldn't drastically surprise me if they've done away with the interim set, despite it usually being the best one to have). Used to be that the standard/SE saloon and estate got standard suspension (with sport suspension optional), the coupe and convertibles in standard/SE spec got sports suspension and the Sport/M Sports have their own settings again (but could be deleted back to the default suspension for the relevant body style.
With regard to the OP, as was stated very early on, yes the E60 535d was available in SE specification with standard suspension, although they're a relatively rare sight compared with the near ubiquity of M Sports.

Although much has been said of simply ditching the run flats for a marked improvement in ride quality.
For instance.
