1981 Silverstone 6hrs - Amatuer Footage!
Discussion
Hey all,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCEf3y3Bsu4&fea...
A few minutes of footage from that race. My uncle shot this on a Super 8 cine camera, so it was interesting for me to see (minus the music..
) as I'm 18. Was interesting to have a look at some of the cars at the time on the move
Hope you enjoy it!

Brilliant.
I was there but don't remember the race much, although I rememember it being wet. Nice to see the 935s and that 908 as well.
What I do remember is going with my girlfriend of three months (now wife of nearly thirty years) and promising to be back to Plumstead for dinner with her posh friends at 7.30. We got there at 8.30 and she has never really forgotten her first lesson in my (bad) timekeeping.

nice mix of Group 5 and group C cars there (think this was the year when both were accepted
into the world championship)
the white porsche 908/4 turbo was co-driven by on E.Jordan, probably more well
known to most people these days for his F1 team owner / TV pundit role.
this 908 was also the car that the great Herbert Muller lost his life in at the Nurburgring 1000k race later in the year. He ran head-on into a porsche 935 that had been parked on the grass after a mechanical during the first lap of the race, and crazily the car was left facing the oncoming traffic. Muller ran wide on this corner (avoiding a spinning car) and hit the 935 at high speed. The accident was made worse for the fact that the 935 had full tanks so the fire was devastating.
amazingly the remains of this 908(chassis 013)resurfaced a few years ago, and were rebuilt into a 1970 spec /03 version that is still raced in historics to this day
nice bit of footage
and I remember how bloody wet is was that day
cheers - Tb

Glad your all enjoying it! I wish I was around in the time of Group C et al, my Uncle was very keen on such events and regularly made appearances at such events.
If you could comment/rate/subscribe then he'd be a very happy man as he doesn't know I've turned into his promoter! Up to you of course.
He has in his own words "hours" of footage from such races so if he gets a positive enough reaction to this then he could upload some more I'm sure!
Cheers, Matt

I was there, supporting Sigi Brunn and EJ(just an F3 driver in those days) in the 908. Not as evocative as the year before when it was finished 2nd running a normlly aspirated engine and 908/3 Gulf bodywork
Jochen Mass dropped Joests 908/80 off after putting it on pole when he should have won (just as he had in 1979 with the factory 936/78)
Edited by freedman on Wednesday 2nd November 19:07
I was there having hitchhiked down from Leeds in the warm weather on the saturday only to find persistent rain all sunday morning.
The Joest 908/80 was a 936 clone and having been on pole by a full second, Mass lost it at the end of lap 1 and ended up in the catch fencing at Woodcote. Edwards and de Villota led for the first part of the race in the original Lola T600, built for the 1982 introduction of Group C, but running as a Group 6 entry with a hole cut in the roof I seem to remember.
The Sigi Brun 908/4 twin turbo co-driven by EJ was the car in which Herbie Muller was killed later in the year at the Nurburgring 1000km. (He hit the stranded Porsche 935 of Bobby Rahal parked on the first lap and full of fuel, Rahal had pleaded with the marshalls to move it but they decided to leave it in place with disaterous consequences).
I think the Silverstone race was won by the well sorted 935 of Schornstein, Grohs and Rohrl. Other interesting entries were the Group 5 EMKA BMW M1, driven by Derek Bell, amongst others, the Charles Ivey Porsche 935 that hit the pit wall late in the race and the Group 5 Ferrari 512BB of Facetti and Finotto that managed about 2 laps all race. This period of endurance racing was a real mish mash of old and newer machines with even Mk 1 Escorts making appearances (RS1600 Group 2 cars, beautiful but totally inappropriate and outdated). Group C was absolutely wonderful and imo the 1983 to 1990 period of this race was stellar. I used to go down on the day before qualifying and all the top teams would be testing, open pits and all the top drivers happy to chat and pose for photo's, magical.

Dont ever remember a 512BB at Silverstone, they only even could compete at Le Mans as an American IMSA class entry so despite Silverstone padding the entry out with some Group 2 cars ( I recall a AMX Spirit/Pacer thing at the time as well!) there was no place for a 512BB.. I think Facetti/Finnotto were in a 308 or 288GTO twin turbo which was allowed in as it been homolgated as a Group B car. Fast but fragile. They then moved on to an ex works Lancia beta Monte Carlo before the "junior" Group C Alba prject, one of the best looking group c cars IMO.Interesting that the Loo's 935 won that year as all the other 935 teams had gone the way of the Kremer aero package while Loos just did there own thing and, again IMO, had the best looking 935 of all.
I remember Bobby Rahal bending the valves while setting his qualifiction time! I was there for the Saturday but dont remember being there for the race itself, cannot remember why....
great bit of film though, thanks for posting, there are not many fans of the Group 4,5 and 6 racing era but I loved it!

The winner wasnt a Georg Loos car either, it was a Vegla racing entry (Loos team didnt enter in 81)

memory really going to pot then! Pretty sure that Joest Sekurit one was the remains of the former Loos car/team. I cannot remember those BB's at all! Perhaps the other Ferrari took all the attention.
Anyone remember the Preston Henn T bird swap shop team? They even brought their US Imsa Tuck over from the states to do this race and Le Mans, As did Bob Akin IIRC. made quite a sight in the Silverstone paddock.
Seems the Jolly club Ferrari came after their outings in a Lancia rather than before as I said earlier.
that site is a great resource, probably means no work will get done today.
