Is the D4 close to the FFRR now in all but name?

A D4 HSE is nice but it's not as nice as a FFRR!!!

I'm now into my third week of Disco 4 ownership and I love it. Don't like the image of the RRS and couldn't justify the cost of a new FFRR, but did look at a couple of nearly-new ones. Not a huge difference in toys and finish I thought, certainly not enough to justify the almost double cost IMHO.

When changing our Disco 3, I considered a D4 HSE and a FFRR 3.6TDV8 Vogue SE. I ready wanted to scratch my FFRR itch however, the D4 is much closer to the FFRR in terms of performance. ride and interior than the D3. The D4 is a newer platform and a more practical family car for our needs. Throw in the 20k price difference and it was a no brainer. The D4 is now 1.5 years old and hasn't missed a beat.

Performance wise the FF is certainly miles better. (4.4TDV8 vs 3.0TDV6)

back seat passengers prefer the FFRR and as mentioned, you get the bigger engines

Disco is a fine family all rounder though

We have a D3 and the write ups on the D4 are great. Drove a new FFRR about 2 yrs ago so not the latest engine and that was sublime, so nice. Not driven a D4 but have a FFRR itch.... Clearly got to drive a D4.

Other option is to keep the D3 as its a great family car we had it from about 7mths old to know 5 years later and only has 19kmiles on it also not had any issues with it (replaced alt under warrenty) and its sprog proof and sell my BMW 3 cab and get the FFRR. Not keen to sell the D3 as its a good un.

like the 4.4 new one hmmmmmmm

I think the D4 is the same heavy platform as the D3? A much improved engine and some better internal plastics but basically the same as a D3. So a workhorse. The FFRR will be a much nicer car to be in but if its an everday car to serve all your needs then a D4 (in my case certainly) might tick the boxes...?

I have both a D4 and a FFRR Vogue SE (not in the same place). It feels that the D4 is a newer generation car. Despite the fact that it is a smaller engine Tdv 6 vs Tdv8 you don't really feel it. There is a slight lag when starting to accelerate but once the double turbos spool up the D4 is quieter and smoother. In terms of practicality the D4 is better due to the 7 seat configuration. I use mine in Austria (have now had it for 2 years) and it is simply awesome in the mountains - summer and winter. I have been considering exchanging my FFRR for the 4.4 version but i don't feel that i am actually getting a better car compared to the D4. The FFRR is an ageing platform and needs to catch up. The D4 has already done so and leads the way. As the previous poster said. With a difference of 20k it is actually a no brainer - but then there is the snob effect.
