It's easy to get disillusioned, but stick with it and you'll find a good one.
Some of the worst Griff's I saw were advertised by 'owners with xx years experience of TVR's and members of the TVR CC'. I was shocked on several occasions after traveling a long way and learned not to trust advertisements, pictures (one even used photo's that were 10+ years old) or what the owners said on the phone.

Yeah, keep looking. Don't get impatient and just buy one in frustration as it'll cost you more in time / money later sorting it out. I took 18 months to find mine and as you said travelled long distances to look at "superb / excellent / fantastic" cars only to find they were awful. I remember seeing one under a cover in London (drove there from Cardiff) and the paintwork was all scratched due to the cover and the interior cream carpets were all stained orange WTF? I was going to walk straight away but pretended I was interested and took it for a drive instead, so I got something out of it.
They do vary a lot.
I found the S-Series even worse. None of the really top end priced examples I saw were remotely as good as the owners seemed to think they were (I accidentally poked a hole in the outriggers of one example) and, in contrast, one of the best I saw was a very modestly priced S1. The Chimaeras seemed to correlate rather better to their price, but they were still quite a mixed bag.
It's worth persevering, though. Apply a healthy degree of scepticism to whatever the seller claims, try and get plenty of photos of the oily (or potentially rusty) bits before you travel to view it, bear in mind good cosmetic and/or low mileage can hide other gremlins and see/drive as many as possible.

Its difficult to comprehend one persons view of immaculate to anothers of its "ok" being an engineer perhaps Im too fussy I was hoping to be a
ble to do a deal with someone with my Westie I dont relish the thought of trying to sell it with so many dreamers/ tyre kickers about, its a serious bit of kit (not the normal nailed together example) probably my best bet would be to get to some meetings or see a few well presented cars with their owners to get a good idea of a "good one" I suppose one of the enjoyments of Chim owning is is to preserve and improve but I would rather not be having to sort a load of previous bodges out, Thanks for your support and enthusiasm tho

Ged, if you can find one (think they only built about 12 cos they were too dear with all new parts) they are between 12 to 14K for an original like mine, i gave £11750 2 months ago, saw 1 at a dealer for 13.5K which sold straight away, this one came from a club member who really cossetted it Awesome tools tho 220bhp in 700kilos easy upgrade £275 to 275bhp takes it to about 4 sec £900 takes it to 330bhp and mid 3 secs.
