I'm about to order a new car from dealer stock (Audi A6) and the car that has the bits I want doesn't have DAB, does anyone know if this can be done aftermarket? I presume not but know that a higher authority on here will have the definitive answer. Thank you in advance.

I've fitted a DAB as an aftermarket to an older (much older) car. I think you're referring to a more "factory fit" option? (Rather than a bling bling Kenwood with an additional twig stuck in the middle of the roof and a cable trailed down a door shut, through the dash etc?)

If you have an AUX/Line-in socket on the new car (most will), then you could get one of these: http://www.pure.com/products/product.asp?Product=V...

I use a cassette converter and a Pure PocketDAB and it works a treat.

Is it the new shape or the older one? These guys can do the older type, I'm guessing the 4G system in the new shape may be an entirely different kettle of fish...

I retro fitted an rcd510 dab unit to my mk 5 golf gti. I also had to upgrade the can bus controller and roof ariel.

I'm sure the audi your looking at has the newer version but it should still be possible to upgrade.

It's the new car with a pop up screen in the dash, that's where DAB is operated on the new car. I had a demo for a day with it fitted and it blew me away, great quality and so much choice. I will contact the company in the link to see if they can help, don't really fancy a wire trailing from the door across the roof but thanks as always for the help, top place this.

What do you use for the aerial? I have a pocket dab and cant really get a signal in the car (think it used the headphones as aerial?)

Ah, yes, they DO use the headphones as an aerial. For some reason, my cassette adaptor works well for this, and I get a great reception, but certain mini-jack to mini-jack cables really suck, whilst others work really well. Most stereo ones (the mini-jack plugs with three metal contacts) seem to work well.

Thanks Cupramax, I followed the link and spoke to HazzyDayz, they can indeed retro fit DAB into the new A6, bit pricey but a great link, cheers.

DAB should just be called 6Music as there's almost nothing else of note on there.

I use FM in my car unless I plug in my Pure Highway "6Music" receiver, wired into the glovebox aux input and sitting under the passenger foot mat/seat.

Disagree, the choice of talk and sport radio is great and the sound quality is excellent.

Have to say that in the A6 I had on test the sound quality of the DAB was very good, to the point where I had to check to see if the car had Bose (which it hadn't). I believe that DAB is standard on A7 but not A6, allegedly it's one of the ways Audi differentiates on the basis that the A7 is a step up from A6.

All DAB broadcasts are compressed, some more than others so will never be CD quality much in the same was a 128kbps mp3 wont. Some stations have higher rates than others and hence will sound better...
