Ford Mondeo Knocking Noise

My 1 year old TDCi mondeo made a funny noise this morning - like a hollow knocking noise at around 2-3 knocks per second.
Checked all fluids and its OK.
Knocking stopped after about 10 minutes or so. Thought I could smell burning, but when i had a poke around the engine bay couldn't smell anything.
Any ideas?
