New HDD for Ps3

Hi all,

Can someone please point me in the right direction of what Hard drive to buy for a upgrade on my ps3, 250 or 300 gb will be good.

I have Google searched thankyou and found info, I was after people personal recommendations that have done the upgrade.

To be honest you don't even need to google search the answer... believe the way to change hard drives is fully detailed (with pictures) on page two of the PS3 owners manual.

Seems easy to do, only a torx screw holding it in. I am just after whats the best drives that people have used.

Any decent 7200RPM 2.5" SATA should do TBH Les. I would go Western Digital or Seagate TBH. Hybrid drives don't seem to offer much of an advantage on the PS3 and SSD are way to expensive when all you need is more space.

Something like this Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB SATAII 16MB Cache 2.5 inch Internal Hard Drive OEM should do the job I think.

if you check the reviews for S. P. Judge "Judgemaestro" he has used it to upgared his PS3 and found no problems at all.

Whichever hard drive you go for, you need to make sure it is 9.5mm thick. A standard 2.5" HDD can be 12.5mm thick which would not fit properly.

If you go on Amazon there are ones that are specifically labelled as PS3 compatible.

Go on eBay and search for a seagate ps3 hard drive but makes sure it's new.

Seagate are the ones ps3's are built with.

Problem is they normally have a habit of charging more because they have added the text "PS3 compatible". The same a "Macbook Compatible" memory is always twice the price...

The drive i mentioned above works fine based on actual user experiences, which is the best recommendation IMO.

Is it just a case of backing up old data and thet swapping over and then plug in the backup HD with all my saved data on it.

Yeah, use an external usb disk formatted as FAT32 to back it up through the xmb. Install new disk, let it work itself out (might need to dl the latest os from Sony) then restore your saved data from the external USB disk

Depending on how much data you have on the PS3, you may need to use an GParted Live CD to create the FAT32 partition larger than default (probably an easier way to do this but thats what I use)

this is where I am lost lol

I got 60gb one (orginal) and have about 8.5 gb left. I can delete some of the game saves off that im not really interested in. Some of the GT5 updates are getting huge.

Thats the one i got! only from Ebyer and for 50 quid!

By the way you dont need a 7500 rpm drive. supposidly the PS3 dose can not take advantage fo the faster drives.

I did mine the other weekend and its working great.

PS few thing to think about / happened to me.

1. dont be worried if the mounting for the HD is different to what you see in the Vids. I saw about 3 diffrent mountings and mine was different again (stright pull out, very easy)

2. Make sure you have the lastest firmware downloadded to a USB data stick. I found it easier to rebuild the PS of the data stick and then recover form the external. By the way this needs to go in a folder structure titled 'PS3' - 'UPDATE'

3. I got an error saying disk not recognised when i frist installed the disk and powered on. you need to start you PS into safe mode (turn power on, hold the button on the front untill the PS3 powers on and then off agian, hold the button again till you get a beep....beep....beepbeep then let go). Form there i selcted rebuild hard disk. after a coupld pf min the PS powered off and when restarted continured with the update (off USB pen drive).

4. you will need both USB ports, one of the PS controller and one for the USB stick. I have bust one of the USbs but you can use a USB splitter if neeeded.

According to the article in my earlier post a 7200RPM drive performs a lot better than a 5400RPM drive, so not so sure you are correct on that TBH.

You can get lucky on ebuyer sometimes, worth shopping around as I used Amazon as an example.
