Blown wall lights - any ideas?

In our lounge we have two ceiling light fittings (3 bulbs in each) and two wall lights (each with a single bulb) and we have a double dimmer switch to control them. We usually only use the wall lights and, when I put them on last night, they blew and tripped out all of the downstairs lights - not too unusual when a bulb foes. When I reset the switch in the consumer unit I discovered that neither bulb would light up. One of them was obviously goosed but the other one works in a different light fitting but not in either wall light. Obviously I'm going to get an electrician around but I would appreciate any thoughts on what the problem could be. Ta in advance.
