..in time. It was due for renewal this past Sunday but I arranged other insurance. I called Churchill and said I don't want cover on Saturday and yesterday I got home to the renewal documents saying I have another years cover... I'm stuck at work till late so can't ring them till tonight, I presume that because I've cancelled the direct debit they won't be taking my money- if I have two policies going through no fault of my own, is that a problem?

They can't take any money if you have cancelled the direct debit.
Just ring them & explain that you cancelled it over the phone & there won't be any issues.
They normally record all calls, so they will have it on record anyway.

Do you have a break today? Call them, it'll only take 5 minutes. Tell them you're disappointed they have renewed your cover after you instructed them to cancel. Ask them to return any money they've taken and advise you will be returning the policy documents.

Call them and check. Sometimes there's a delay in insurance company systems, so your documents may have been in in the pipeline before you cancelled.

Thanks guys. I called to check, they admitted fault and assured me I won't be charged. They needed my bank details again to set up the cancellation (normal?) but I did tell them Halifax won't let them have any money (there's no money in that account anyway) My direct debit usually came out on the 10th of each month.

You're lucky. Last year my policy was renewed automatically and the full premium taken from my bank. I didn't realise until the policy docs turned up. I'd already found a cheaper policy on-line and paid for that in full. So I ended up with 2 policies.
Took over a month of calls to get the money back. Cheeky buggers even tried to only pay back 11 months worth!

Well I've made it clear to them that they will certainly not be having any of my money and I'll be going into my bank tomorrow to cancel the account anyway as I no longer use it!
