Can't really understand why, would it not have been better to have them on the space staion for that lenth of time?

That would use up a lot of resources for one experiment for a year and a half, I would imagine.

Cost.

Time and space on the ISS is precious and expensive. Also, these people were not trained astronauts or cosmonauts.

The experiment was more of a psychological test to see how a group managed in close confines for the length of time of a simulated mission.
