Morning all, I am currently trying to justify to myself why I need a weekend car and I was wondering what the general view is on weekend cars, how many of you have them and how often you use them.

I am planning to do a few of the Petrolhead Nirvava tours next year and I regularly travel back to my home town 140 miles away to see my mates and have a few beers etc. At the moment, I only have a 3 series diseasal which perfoms the daily commute admirably but it doesn't light my fire and the idea of doing the Stelvio Pass in it does not really appeal to me.

I like the idea of having a weekend car tucked away in the garage and just the fact of knowing I can jump in at any time and go for a good drive makes me feel warm. The current plan is to get a V8 Vantage in April next year, tuck it away in the garage and use it for the occasional jaunt to see my mates and the occasional trip into Europe with some like-minded petrol heads driving

The results of the poll will in no way influence my decision (indeed, I think my mind is already made up) I am just curious as to how many people have weekend cars and how often they are used.

Thanks for your response.

Yup, scabby MX-5 for weekend hoons and the odd trackday, it's an easy one to live with because of the low purchase price and pocketmoney ownership costs, not sure I could personally justify £20k+ worth of depreciating metal for only occasional use though.
There are three guys at work who are ex MX5 owners and they miss their exes greatly! Have you ever taken it on a long haul into Europe?

I used to use mine as a daily driver but then upped the power to the point where it could break the engine or gearbox at any point so put it on weekend/ special occasion use to keep the miles off it and make it last a bit longer. Has lasted 3 years so far.

I have one. I'm too poor to own a second car, so I use it for the other 5 days too. (An M3).

Likewise I have a Mk1 MX5 which comes out with the sun. It was bought very cheaply, insurance is buttons and the only big expense has been four new tyres to replace the wang kangs.

Yeap, diesel van for work and general commuting. I've had a weekend car in some form or another for the last 6 years. Try not to drive it for a daily commute because i want it to feel special when i finally do get the road to myself.

Definitely worth it, I don't even have a garage to keep mine tucked up frown

Daily is a 1.2 Clio. God it's slow.

tbh I don't really need either of my two cars

the weekly shop is done on line and I only use the DD to drive to football twice a week - I could just as easily get the tube

however, I'm happy to run both despite the expense as come the end of the week it makes it feel worthwhile having done five days hard graft and road trips are something to look forward to

I guess as I use my car mainly at weekends then it is a weekend car. Like the first bloke to reply as my car gets occasional use there's little point in having anything too expensive. I've found it surprisingly good fun to drive for what it is and its proving to be nice and cheap to run which is what I need for the next couple of years... then I can save up for something really nice!

BMW Z4M. Used only at weekends. The odd evening trip to my parents or something. Civic 1.6 as a daily driver.

I'm about the same, although mines not too scabby. It doesn't really get used in the week, but that's mainly because I need plenty of space to carry stuff, which clearly the MX5 doesn't do.
My Dad's got a 10 year old boxter, which he uses a reasonable amount, wouldn't that do what you want, and cost a fair bit less?

A Porsche 993 - originally used as an everyday car.

Change of jobs meant daily commute turned into 5 miles of stop start rush hour horribleness and change of man-hormones meant 993 turned into (selectively) modified snarling beastie.

Now use honda jazz snotter for daily commute and 993 for fun and polishing.

Well not had it for either yet, but why not, it's only a car. Snow, I'd probably use a different one just because it'll get stuck so easily.

Yes used more than once per week, though this didn't used to be the case. I swapped my Cerbera recently for a Monaro to enable more usage. the Cerbera isn't a family-friendly car in reality. Ok, you can get a small passenger in the back, but then the front passenger is sat nose pressed up against the windscreen. Plus the location of seatbelt mounts in the back is pretty unsafe for the rear passenger. All this, and the fact my wife wouldn't drive it, meant it was only used when I was off out on my own, i.e. rarely.

The Monaro, on paper is the perfect replacement. V8, reasonably quick, roomy, rare enough to get noticed, very easy to live with for the wife...

However... My DD 530i was off the road waiting for me to fix it, so I used the Monaro. All weathers and traffic conditions didn't phase it at all, it performed perfectly, it was even relatively ok on fuel. It would actually make a really good DD. So this is making me think that maybe it's not a weekend car at all. There is no compromise needed with it and, dare I say it, it feels a bit too errrm, well 'normal'.

So my advice is if you get a weekend car, get something that maybe you wouldn't want to drive during the week due to comfort, practicality, excessive fuel usage, or whatever... That way it will stay fresh and fun.

When the TVR was sat in the garage on wet days and work days I used to think about how much it cost, how it was plotting to kill me, and how it could potentially leave me at the side of the road... But on the few occasions I actually got in it and fired up the AJP... Well, all that was forgotten, says it all really.
