Been informed this morning that someone I've known well has been killed in a car accident this morning.
His driving was atrocious, to the point his insurance company insisted on him having a black box - but it didn't stop him.
This isn'r a "slow down" post, just use speed sensibly, yeah, guys?
Don't drive like a knob.

They should use them for "old" drivers rather than the young people of society!
Never have any issues with the younger drivers, it's always the old & senile ones that get me!
I think they're only used when the driver has a track record...Never have any issues with the younger drivers, it's always the old & senile ones that get me!
This guy had certainly had a number of smaller prangs. I know he had a strict mileage limit and this box supposedly measures speed / braking force etc...

Think more could be done in educating etc rather than sticking a box under the seat.

I disagree. I've had a couple of very close shaves over the last few years and I was well aware of the consequences. A black box monitoring my every move would have stopped me "coming close"
To be fair, I don't think he'd have listened to any more education. He drove like a prick, and knew it.OP, sorry to hear your loss
From memory, it read something like "However, in month 4 Will had to swerve & suddenly stop because a dog ran out in the road. Luckily, because his driving had been fine in the first quarter, his premium did not go up." So in other words, for me avoiding two accidents they would bump up my premium, my fault or not! Challenged the company about it and was told something like "it's not the point/not important" but they refused to answer, so I can only presume that being the case.

My insurance company tried to give me a black box (totally clean license, no accidents, just a ridiculous premium due to the postcode). However the discount was nominal and it would go up as well as down. The bloke on the phone was being very cagey about it as well, but for me the tipping point was when reading the information leaflet. This guy had certainly had a number of smaller prangs. Sorry to hear about losing a mate, it's always the friends and family that I feel sorry for when someone kills themselves after driving like knob.
A lot of people I know have been lucky enough to have learnt a lesson after having less serious accidents after knobish driving (myself included) but I suppose there's always a few that don't learn from their mistakes or aren't lucky enough that their first accident isn't a serious one.

I don't know... hope not as well.
Sorry to hear about the loss Kate, but are you pre judging your friend here?It seems you don't know all the details of the accident I'm presuming, so how do you know your friend was responsible for the accident that resulted in him losing his life.

Young and stupid with very little sense of danger... For fun... To "impress piers" need the list go on?
Who is Piers? Seriously, drive like a knob and it will eventually catch up with you.
My sympathies to the people he left behind.
