I'm starting to think it might be time to upgrade the AV kit in my lounge.
Currently:
50" Samsung plasma (very old)
Onkyo TX-SR607 amp
Anthony Gallo Nucleus Micro speakers
This is fed by a couple of SkyHD boxes, and AppleTV and a PS3 through an HD matrix.
The room itself is about 4.5m long by 3m wide, and the TV is recessed into a false wall at one end. For TV watching we sit about 3.5m from the screen.
I'm thinking of swapping to a 59" plasma to replace what's there now, but I'm yet to see the model I'm thinking of in the flesh.
What I'm wondering is whether the room is big enough to fit a projector. There's the option to put the screen so it drops down over the TV (and front speakers, so assume a special screen is needed?) and put the projector on the opposite wall, about 4.5m away.
If it would work, I'm thinking of changing the amp to something like the TX-NR709 as it has dual HDMI output, so one to the projector and one to the TV.
I assume most projector screens drop down by IR control so can be integrated into a Pronto setup. I've seen the optoma HD33 projector which looks half decent from the reviews I've seen, and has RS232 control, so can also be connected to the RFX9600.
So I guess my questions are, is the room big enough for a projector setup? Will that projector work from that far away? And finally, which screens are good for situations where they cover the front speakers?
Oh, and why don't TVs have RS232 control any more?!

A projector would work fine from that distance, mine is only seven feet from the target wall and produces a 60" image and it's not maxed out for zoom yet!
Unfortunately PJs don't work too well in lightly painted rooms as the light bounces all around and washes out the image, so for occasional viewing I'd recommend a screen and a black out blind fitted in a recess in the window, so you can have curtains normally and total darkness for films!
