My wife and dog have just been attacked by 2 labs- whilst i was on the phone to her.
She was walking our bearded collie on a lead back from the local fields through the streets- dog on short lead, walking along, nothing odd that i can imagine. Both of us grown up with dogs, happy with dogs having a scrap etc.
BUT
whilst on phone to me, she mentions there are two dogs woofing over a gate, she on opposite side of road. these 2 labs then clear the gate (not sure how) and attack her and Barney- and not in a doggy scrap way, but (from what i could hear of their vocal tone) and what Mrs P was saying ("oh fk help me please help me, stop, stop stop" in real terror) these dogs properly went for our dog, Mrs P ran up the road being chased by them, and at the edge of theri "territory"- say some 30m from their house they stopped in the middle of the road and stoof barking (in an agressive tone).
Mrs P was in tears, haven't heard her that upset in years, and barney has lost alot of fur and has a torn ear which is bleeding (he's not particularly bothered).
I'm feeling angry right now, its horrible hearing your wife screaming down the phone for help, knowing there is NOTHING you can do, but don't want to jump the gun and phone the police. personally feel like going round and giving them a good kicking- both the dog and the ownres, but that doesn't solve anything. My other thought at the front of my mind is what would have happened if Mrs P had a child with her?
thoughts?
p.s. please just beleive me that mrs P and Barney did nothing to provoke the attack- and she didn't have time to release the dog from the lead, and was too panicked to let go of the dog (whcih coupled to the fact its a busy ish suburban road might have resulted in our dog being run over)

I would phone the police. (non emergency number). Because what if next time it's a 13yo walking the family soppy dog to the paper shop and back. (Something I used to do as a kid). Or old lady with dog.
It's not right, it is dangerous and it could happen again before you have words with the owner (which may go badly).

I would definately report it, as said, the dogs are clearly a danger to anyone walking down the road, not even their property!!!
As said, you could talk to the owners, but unless they are willing to take responsibility, you might be better off talking to a brick wall.
At least the presence of the police would maybe make them take proper precautions.
Next time it could be a young child with a puppy or similar, hate to think what could happen!

I'd go have a word with the owners first. Then depending upon their behaviour, report it or not.
When my dog was a puppy a very aggressive GSD got out and tried to bite her (I got in first and it ran away back into their garden) - So I went and knocked on the door and told them their dog had got out and tried to bite mine. They were very apologetic and said they'd get the fence/gate sorted out, so I left it at that.

despite chatting to the owners, i would report it - as they could be 'repeat offenders' no matter how 'nice' the owners come accross.we have a 'nice' neighbour but with (IMO) a dangerous dog. all the locals know to steer well clear of the dog.
As well as taking photos of the dog, i think the attacker dog owners are laible for the damage their dogs do - ie laible for the vet bill of getting your dog seen to and perhaps stitched. if their dogs are insured the 3rd party bit will cover this. also covers any damage to your wifes clothing or treatment etc.
