Now I'm sure there's a few posts about these but to be honest it confuses me and I'm hopinh a nice generous sole will help me out. Basically I start work for Saab soon and my job will sometimes involve long driving, cant afford to lose my license or even get points so I'm looking into investing in some sort of advice. Would anybody be able to tell me the difference between Radar / Laser detectors. What the legality is? What the pro's and con's are? And whats the cheapest one that does its job??

Road Angel is a pre-programmed GPS based fixed camera locator. It has the location of every fixed camera in the UK programmed in, with the limit in force noted, and gives you lots of warning as you approach. It also has the favourite laser van locations programmed, although as these are mobile not every site will be logged. It's excellent, as are most of the similar GPS based units.
For laser vans the only real answer is a Laser Jammer. If a laser detector (as opposed to a jammer) gives you a warning, then it's too late - you're nicked! The jammers do work and the legality has not been tested in court yet. If you brake and switch the jammer off as soon as it warns you, then you'll probably be OK. Many PHers have them, but I don't (yet) so can't really comment.

i have a road angel and give it a big thumbs up. hasnt let me down yet. However, apart from jammers, take any advice re laser "detectors" with a pinch of salt. As already has been said, chances are it'll tell you once you have already been clocked by the Bib....

How much is a road angel then?? Are there different versions?? I think thats the one I will go for then and possibly a laser jammer at a later date. I think they sell them at Halfords so may go down to have a look, would I be looking at about £300???

£400 for the new model. You may find a Halfrauds flogging off the old model for around £350. The old model doesnt look as flash but has most of the features and 2 things that I prefer...
1. The laser alert is seperate so you dont have to have the entire unit on top of the dash if you dont want but just stick the ball laser sight on the windscreen and the rest of the unit pretty much wherever you want so long as it can pick up the sats.
2. the subscription for updates. On the new unit they no longer offer £99 for lifetime subscription. You still get the 1st year free but after that you can only buy another 1 year or another 2 years...

To be honest £400 is a lot of money with me considering as I'm only a trainee my take home is going to be around £600.
However I am definatly going to get one, are there any cheaper models or is that pretty much it? If it is then I will get the older one with a lifttime subscription.

yep, there are cheaper ones but its a case of you get what you pay for. £400 is a lot of money but when i sought opinions on the cheaper models either the features werent so good or, more importantly for me, the false alarms were commonplace. I wanted a unit I could rely upon in that when it went off, I knew a camera was there. If it went off at every set of traffic lights or electric doors etc then I would end up ignoring it and may as well not have bought one at all...
