Classic Car Insurance WTF
Discussion
In an idle moment, I logged onto Confused.com and typed in my details for an insurance quote... Holly Cow.
Footman James costs me £120 a year for a 2.3 Viva worth at the outside £3k. Passed my test in 1982, no convictions, but no NCB in my name cos ths is the only car I drive in my name, and has been for some years. (You don't get NCB with most classic policies)
The Policy Shop wanna charge... Get this £10330.84... Gulp!
KWI... £9999.00
Fluxdirect... The cheapest at £1802.00
And they get business??? They won't be getting mine, ever.
Had a phone call from a cheeky chappy at Confused asking if I'd managed to find a competitive quote... What could I say. I think I laughed so much he just lost the will to live and hung up.

I used to run a GT6 on a Footman James policy as my only car, like you accruing no NCB. When the time came to get a proper policy on a 'grown-up' car (Sierra 2.0 GLSi - very nice handling car BTW) they provided an 'evidence of no claim' document (it might not of been called that) which was happy to accept in lieu of the usual NCB. That was about 20 years ago though...

Don't look on poxy comparison sites if you're looking for Classic Car insurance. They're not really geared up for it, and all the true classic insurers won't be on there. I'd suggest using a good broker to find you a good deal. I work for Equity Red Star who have a large classic car book. (I don't do classic car insurance myself, but have my car insured 'in house'). They are now offering breakdown cover and Personal Accident cover as part of their classic covers, but you won't find it on comparison sites. Speak to a good local broker for your best deal. I pay about £110 for my Opel Manta with 3000 mile limit. Good luck.
I'm thinking about getting a classic as a "daily" driver (I only did about 3700 last year) but am worried about losing my NCB when I have to go back to a 'normal' car, do any classic policies either let you gain additional NCB or 'freeze' whatever you have so that it can be transferred back to a standard policy at a later date?
Sorry for the hijack, but this is my main concern about running a classic as a main car!

NCB is purely a discount given against some sort of proof of incidents/claims history
no you wont lose any NCD provided you don't have an accident
when you switch provider get a letter from your present insurer to prove your NCD period, it'll say some thing like you've been with them x amount of time without claim you also want it to cover your previous NCD period if you had NCD periods before this insurer - my 'eight Years No Claims Bonus is from a letter dated 25 April 2005
NCD is a bit of a con really, it's a discount - some insurers will give you x amount of NCD based on the fact you've driven cars for x years without incidents/claims even if you've not had insurance in your nasme before
classic insurance in a way gives your full discount at the start rather than a ramped system
NCD is because you have proved you are are a reduced risk with classic they assume you to be a reduced risk at the start in a way because of your vehicle choice and the way it will be driven but they also ask you about your history, 3/5(?) years with mine I think
also NCD protection only protects your NCD - if you have an incident/claim your premium could still increase because of this
always phone the insurer after getting quotes or if you don't fit the necessary criterion on their web site because their web site will be a simplified version of what they offer not comprehensive – don’t bother with comparison sites they’re for ‘average’ cars and ‘average’ drivers
with classic insurance ask about unlimited mileage as it’s often the same cost to you as limited
my cover includes:
agreed valuation,
unlimited mileage
third party cover to drive other cars
wife to drive this car
no garage
modified classic
legal cover
UK and European breakdown recovery
and probably other things I’ve forgot
I’m with Peter James – go to their web site scroll to bottom of their Home page, fill in two boxes and they will ring you back (9am-5pm Monday to Friday)

leave the cost of normal car insurance behind - and you'd be amazed at what some insurer class as classic or specialist
ETA: oh, yeah, I remember now, my classic is my only car (I do have the option of useing my wife's car, as if it's ever available just to me!) and my classic is obviously as it's my only car my daily car - others will have already seen I've been using classics as dailies for 20 years now
- I've also, in the past, owned more than one car at once and a mix of modern and classics all of which had to be insured seperately
