Magazine options

I have bought the other half a Nikon d3100 for her birthday and I'd also like to get her a magazine subscription as well.

What do you recommend?

At a beginner level you're probably looking at Photography for Beginners or Digital SLR. Monthlys with a mix of news, reviews, interviews and projects. Worth seeing if you can take a 6mth subscription IMO as many magazines like to regurgitate content so after a while there's nothing new. By that point she might have progressed and you can look at the next tier.

I was just going to get her a gift subscription to go with the camera. All we have ever had before is point and shoot.

There's a mag called 'Digital SLR' which I highly recommend, seems to be aimed at the amateur and is full of practical advice on how to acheive certain shots, reviews of affordable kit etc. Only £2.99 as well, bargain!

Yup, that's the one I was referring to. Bottom rung of a three-step ladder put out by Bright Publishing. The others are Advanced Photographer and Photo Professional.

The one I forgot to mention this AM was N-Photo - a new Nikon-only magazine from Future Publishing. Looks promising. First issue out 24th Nov IINM

is photography the end in itself or is she interested in just taking pics of certain subjects? Family / friends, flowers, scenery etc. In other words does she have interests that the camera will capture? I'm guessing a beginers book in that subject area would be a better focussed learning tool. I think the ILEX Series of Field Guides are very good little books. Well written, not too techie and well illustrated.
