MINI Cooper D / Clubman D - thoughts?
Discussion
I'm considering moving the MX-5 on as my new job means I'm doing 20k business miles plus my social mileage (which has been about 20k/year over the last two years). Assume then I'll be doing approx 30-35k per year. I've already ruled out buying two cars due to the insurance cost (I'm still 23 and although I have 6 years no claims I've struggled to find an an insurance company who will mirror it.
Anyway.. I'm looking for something "fun to drive" though I know not many things will get close to the MX-5 in terms of driver involvement, as well as hitting the stroke with economy. I'm getting approx 40mpg with the MX-5 driving economically, so hoping for something that I can get 60-65mpg out of in similar circumstances.
The Clubman D has shown up in my search as they seem great value, approximately 10k for a 2008 model with leather, and a load of other options too. Ideally the car I'm buying should have Xenons or at least very good headlights as I do a lot of night driving (often start work at 5am and many of the roads I use to get to work are unlit (including the motorways at this time of the morning).
Any suggestions/reviews? Cheers in advance...

I'm interested to see what folk think of this myself as I'm considering a Clubman Diesel in the New Year. Unlike you though I only do town miles and 10 mile journeys to and from work.
It appeals to me as I have a small, sick little dog who's often in and out of the vets and the rear opening doors seem ideal for getting him in and out without the hassle (currently driving a 2 door clio so its a bit of a bind), added to this I'm main carer for my elderly Mum so shopping would me much easier.

Recently moved from my mx5 to a clubman s. my move was based upon much more company miles.
The clubman does its job well, but is no where near he involvement and back to basics of the mx5. However i would dread doing e mileages i have been doing in the mx5. Mpg wise i can get 42mpg easy on motorway and upto 50mpg if cruising at 60 mph along the m42.

It's (too) often slated on PH but the Clubman in my view is a far more practical proposition that the standard Mini. SWMBO has had one for 18 months now and loves it, as do I. It's taken a family of four on a couple of driving holidays (OK, so a roofbox was needed for the luggage, but better to buy a box for such occasional use than pay for a much bigger boot that you don't use 99% of the time), returns over 40mpg and is far more engaging to drive and sit in than any of the alternatives that we tried at the time - all of which, without exception, our teenagers dismissed as boring!
If only they'd put two rear doors on instead of one . . .
