I'm considering sticking some of these on the Golf this winter. I can get hold of decent, tested part worns (i know, i know...there will be differing opinions!) for around £50 a pair. They'll come with 4.5mm of tread left.
However, I've read somewhere that at roughly 5mm and under their performance really starts to deteriorate. Can anyone confirm this or will I still see a benefit in more extreme conditions this winter?

You will probably still see a benefit, but if you see how much tread these things come with, you'll probably want to avoid ones as low as 4.5mm. My Uniroyals appear to have 15mm+ on them. I'd only take the option you mention if there was literally no way I could spend any more.

Tread depth = traction in snow. By all means get some part worns, but most ebay sellers seem to offer ones that have been removed as the tread is the sort of depth you mention.

At 4.5mm they are 1.5mm below the usual level for winter snow use. Nokian winter/all season tyres have tread depth markers counting down to 6mm, once below that then they wont be as effective.
However if its only cold wet/icey roads then they'll still be better than the usual summer tyres. At that depth though they are 1/2 worn (usually start at 8mm) so are they 1/2 price ?
