Some advise please.

I have just bought an 03 Type 23 Elise. The car has had some mods including sports exhaust with sports cat and an ITG air flow system (think thats correct!). The problem is the noise level is so loud that at 70mph i can't hear the radio,my wife(no bad thing) or anything else for that matter! I had an elise a while ago and my sports exhaust was never as booming as this. any advise on how i can make the car a little quieter?

Also has anyone else found a way of getting better reception on the radio without interference from the engine?

Thanks!

change the exhaust for a quieter one and put the standard airbox back on - you can sell the ITG for £200. A Larini exhaust is quieter than the Janspeed/Magnex you probably have.

For the radio you can get( or make) a grounding plate - T piece shape of metal that oges under the antenna in the boot, then ground this to the chassis, also wrap some silver foil tape around the antenna cable.

Thanks for the reply. I was kind of hoping that i would not have to that change much, maybe i will just live with it and see how it goes. As for the radio I will take you advise as its driving me mental!

Can i get the grounding plate pre-made anywhere? or is it easier just to sort it myself?

Cheers

You could also get some better speakers fitted in your car. The std. speakers are bad qualitiy, i also fitted better one, just ask for advice at the local car audio store and they'll have your problem solved.

Or get other exhaust/airbox, but that is $$$

Get rid of the sports cat imho. I reckon that will be a major contributor to the roar.

If you have the std cat and std airbox then it wont cost much and you can sell the others for £400 and that would fund a nice stereo upgrade ...or just wear ear plugs - I have a 4-2-1, cat replacement pipe and a supercharger on mine...I wear earplugs for long motorway journeys !

www.autostyle-solutions.com used to sell the grounding plates - dunno if they still do.

It s T shaped piece of aluminium sheet that fits under the aerial.

Looks like ear plugs are the order of the day then! I will upgrade the speakers and head unit asap as the original is awful. I am just going to enjoy driving this car sooooo much, its like nothing else I have ever driven! Took the hardtop off today and remembered how nice it is to drive with the roof off on a sunny day.

Thanks for the advice. I am sure i will return for some more at some point........

I would say get rid of the sportscat, having had a sports exhaust/Hurricane on my old car and a sports exhaust/Hurricane/sportscat on my current one, the difference is amazing with the sportscat on as well. (MUCH louder)!

I had a sports zorts and bypass pipe on my S1 (now got S2), and would agree with others, get a cat back in line to drop the noise levels..

On another note if your looking for for a new head unit i'm selling a Sony CDXM1000-TF cd player and mp3 with a fantastic display (32000 colours tft) brought new for 440, looking for 300..

give me a call

cheers

My S1 was very loud (had a BBR sports exhaust) The stuffing had blown out over the 6 years I've had it. I had the exhaust cut open and restuffed with SS wire wool) and re welded cost about £100 by sportomotive. It is much quieter and cheaper than a new exhaust.

The BBR back box is quite large so a proper stuffing does quieten it down and this may not be the case with your exhaust!

I've got the dealer fitted foil on the underside of the boot. I've got the T shape groundin plate and I've covered the aerial cable in foil tape - radio is slightly better but still crap.
