Just got a shiny new laptop coutesy of work.
It has a HDMI port, question is: Can you breakout digital audio from it?
Got a few albums i bought on 24/96 before realising i couldn't use this through USB and Cambridge Audio DAC. Only accepts this through SPDIF. This week one of my favourite albums, (Fleetwood Mac Rumours), has been released in 24/96 and would love to hear it. (Original is excellent quality already). No point if none of my kit supports it though.

If you can pick up a used DVDO Edge video processor I think you can send audio out via spdif or coax from the HDMI input as there is a menu to chose which option you want. Whether it outputs at 96/24 is another matter though. I've sold mine so I can't check for you, but if you have a look on AVforums or AVSforum there are dedicated video processor sub forums that discuss the Edge VP.

FWIW I think I got £250 for my Edge, they may be cheaper still now.

More than i would wish to spend. Can buy a audio card that can output at 24/96 for way less.

Just wanted to know if you could do HDMI to SPIF cheaply.

Yes, that's me...sledgehammer to crack an audio nut. smile I only sold mine to buy a Lumagen Video Processor which doesn't even do audio apart from via HDMI but cost over a grand. Have a look on Lektropaks website to see if they offer something that'll do it for you cheaper:

Are you sure it doesn't have S/P-DIF? A lot of laptop headphone sockets double as S/P-DIF. If not just get a cheap generic USB soundcard with S/P-DIF smile I think HDMI generally requires video even if you only want the audio.
