Do you find yourself drawn to 'bad' car related decision?
Discussion
Every time it is new car time I seem to be drawn towards making stupid bloody decisions and really struggle to go down a realistic/sensible path. I know what the right thing to do is but must be something broken in my head that tries to make me do bad things!!
So the current example:
I have been looking for a 4x4 for a while now for a few reasons. Would be a second car so no used for any serious mileage but used often.
1. I have never had one and quite fancy it
2. My Mrs has to get to work in the winter no matter what the weather (she is a nurse and covers nights so they are limited on people)
3. We live in a really hilly area so would be handy if we get any stupid weather to get everyone safely around and not be bloody house bound.
4. Need something that can take a bit of punishment, as my 3 boys get bigger we need to carry them and more kit and we have all started shooting/camping etc.
So fairly reasonable reasons to look at a 4x4.
I stared with a smaller budget and was looking at Jeep Grand Cherokees for around £6k, then that moved to around £10k - something low mileage and the 3L diesel engine. Now I am looking at these:

So the budget has gone up somewhat and clearly I am looking at the most uneconomical/stupid machines I can find. Try as I might I cant seem to make the bad voices go away and with cars it usually wins, honestly it feels like a sickness........
Surely I cant be alone????

If you don't have to keep up with the other parents at school then why not go for something around 10 or more years old. I have a 1999 Landcruiser, it's relatively cheap to tax and insure, is very reliable with not too many electronics to go wrong, doesn't cost much in maintenance and does everything you would require and more plus you wont be anal about your kids getting it messed up.
In answer to your original question, I do get caught up with bad decisions but normally see sense before I part with my hard earned.

I know that there are MANY more sensible options and this one isnt about anyone else (i.e dont care what anyone else thinks at school/neighbors etc), my problem is that I often have the bad ideas and then act on them...........

I share your pain and raise you.
Our MB has produced one or two bills that ave irritated me, and with an increasing mileage it's time to go.
Unfortunately other half drives it mostly and it looks good still. As I earn the money she does not care about the bills.
I fancied something low mileage and unfashionable. She is a badge snob of the worst kind.
I also have an itch for 4wd, and quite fancy a discovery. Td3 is out of our range, td 2.5 is in it, but other half not keen as the neighbours have td3 and everyone will know it's old.
She quite fancy a rangerover. I'm not buying a p38, and the new shape are heavy on miles and petrol. Out of pan, into fyer.
Combine this with the possibility of her doing more miles, my mind had blown, and I had decided not to advertise the car again.
Typically someone agreed my price and now I have to find a replacement...

Sadly I wont be doing much in the way of offroading but your right would make the decision much easier!

I have a solution to budget-expansion when it comes to 4wd shopping - I just ask myself "how happy will I be thrashing the crap out of this offroad?", because I know thats what will most likely end up happening to it.
That helps reduce my interest in flash ones.
