Hmmm ... have run mine for two years with no front plate at all (carried in the boot just in case ... "It was stuck on with double sided pads officer - it fell off earlier and I heard it hit the bottom of the car - look - you can see the grlle imprint in the pads"). Got put on for MOTs only.

Have been stopped by police several times and nothing has ever been said ...

Have left it on this time (MOT at start of October) simply to stop it cooling so well so that the heater works - makes about 20 degrees of difference!!!

Mine's held on by velcro, very handy for the spirited drives!

Daz, I'm so surprised you haven't had a tug for those plates or are you a diplomat?

I did ,had the same on the rears and made up some external lights from a motor bike but got stopped and had to pay £30 .Kept the front number plate and to date its been ok..
This is a very old picture with the alloys which came with the car and my home made rear plate side lights but they had to go so back to standard on the back
sold them wheels in 24hours seen them on a few griffs.

Don't you get stopped for having a black and white plate on a modern car though ? I have a 1973 Range Rover and it appeared illegal to have a B&W fitted to that but maybe I got that wrong.

velcroed number plate is good idea, leave number plate in the boot and if pulled over for missing number plate, say " blimey, lucky i have a spare one in the boot oficer" but i would keep mine on in the winter

Hi,

If you do not like the plate on teh standard place (I had it on the standard plate on my previous Chimaera), you can always put a sticky one on your bonnet, see photo (like I have it currently - was done by the previous owner, but I think it's much better that than standard postion - I guess it's a matter of taste...).

Has anyone tried mounting it below the opening ?
I guess it would be nearly touching the floor. Is there a legal location for the plate / distance from edge of vehicle / height etc ?

It's just the low angle that the photo was taken from...
