Was just thinking, there are a load of car sharing websites about. But if I decided I could car share which is the best?

I am not into saving the planet really, just saving the price of petrol.

Does anyone do this? Does it work?

Obviously it is a totally stranger in your car, but I do love meeting randoms so it might work.

What are peoples thoughts on this one?

As a member of the European Society for the appreciation of Axe murders, I think it's a great idea.

I do car share with a colleague about 3 days a week. It saves me £30 a week which and makes the drive to and from work a little less boring.

Yea, it is a bit close to hitching a lift? ;-)

So does it really only work if it is a colleague who needs to be in at the same time?

As an occasional hitchhiker, I would say fear of axe murderers is mostly unfounded. As long as you set an agreed price for any journey and your times are the same it would be a good idea. I would recommend you give them good warning if you are not picking them up and tell them to get a backup. I have heard from quite a few people who have done this have ended up with freeloaders who want a regular free ride.

I can't imagine organising to share with someone that doesn't live too close to me and might not work near me and doesn't start work at the same time!!
Too inconvenient

So the websites are really not going to work then I expect. Just have a chat with people at work?

It might work if there were people working in their nearest city (such as Leeds) and commute together from surrounding areas such as Harrogate, Halifax etc but I don't work in the centre of anywhere so it's never going to work for me.

Years ago I shared a house with 2 other people who worked in the same office, even that didn't work for car sharing as no-one's work schedules matched - one person would be ready to go but another would be "just another 5 mins" which turned into 30mins-1hr.

It would only work if you could guarantee to start and finish work at a set time everyday and these days not many people can say that.
