Hi all,

I am looking at replacing two of my cars with one large 4x4.

I am split between these three but interested in people's opinions as to which they would recommend...

- 2005/06 Range Rover Sport 2.7 TDV6
--> I just love the look and presence these cars have

- 2007 Mercedes ML (Mk2) 320CDI
--> Probably the best all round car

- 2007 BMW X5 (Mk2) 3.0D
--> The most economical out of the three

All cockmobiles. Get a proper Range Rover, Landrover Discovery or Toyota Landcruiser. They are the real deal.

I went for the RRS, but tbh I'd prefer a normal RR. Every time I see a RRS on the road I make several negative assumptions about the drivers competence.

The X5 beats the Merc all day long as the best all round car. I dont like the image of the RR Sport. Drove a Merc ML, GL, Q7 and an X5 - the X5 was superb. Loved mine to bits.

My x5 averaged 28mpg. The 'efficient dynamics' version came out around Nov 2007 and is easier to tax and quite a bit more fuel efficient - mine was pretty much the last of the pre ED cars.

Thanks for your comments and votes guys.

I do have an estate at the moment and is one of the cars I am thinking of selling to part fund the 4x4. The main reason for looking at 4x4 is because the wife wants one. In the past, for about 10 years straight we had a Honda CRV and then a Freelander 2 and she now wants to go back to a 4x4.

The three I have listed are the ones we both like.

The normal RR is aso a nice car but I believe rides even higher than the Sport which may be a touch too much

Daemon, when you compare teh Mk1 X5 to ML, which ML the previous Mk 1 or the current Mk 2 ?

I have not driven a sport yet.

But out of the other two i would take the X5, the ML feels like a van to me.

Porsche Cayenne, I know, another softroader but I'd have one over all of the above.

Thanks mate.

I did consider the Cayenne but it is a fair bit thirstier than the three I have listed. The Diesel Cayenne is too new and hence outside my price range frown

Guys, interested in your thoughts behind the ML comments.

I found the newer/current/Mk2 ML not a bad car, looks wise or driving it.

What don't you like about it ?

Have you looked at the Volvo XC90 D5? it might surprise you...lovely interior, ultra comfy seats...we prefer it over the Q7 (we have the use if a few large SUVs)

the ML is always the last choice
the XC90 is generally first choice followed closely by the Q7 depending on the type of run.

Not a bad call. I was behind one the other day and it kept flying off the lights, had some serious power for a big car....but there is something I can't quite put my finger on with regard to its styling that I don't like.

I thnk I would rather have a Hyundai Santa Fe over the VW wobble

The older RRS is going to be a nightmare if anything goes wrong - very costly, not great build quality.

So although I'd personally prefer a RRS, my head would say buy the X5.

Gaffer had an early ML - rubbish by all accounts

Then there was an early V6 Cayenne, I don't think it was without it's issues, but they must have liked it because they bought a new diesel. There are no circumstances where I would even look at one, but it takes all sorts.
