So, everyone's favourite gimp wrote this fairly limp article, long on imagery, short on substance.

It's the usual bks, which neatly glosses over the fact that he was a minister in the government that got us into this mess, etc etc etc. It's a well-worn story.

But the surprise for me was the venom with which this has been received by the Graun's commentards:

You might not understand it Ed, but millions do, so I'll write it for you in big letters.

THE PROTESTERS ARE LEADING THE DEBATE.

And perhaps you don't understand it, but you are part of the rotten and stinking system which needs to go.

If you were serious you'd be speaking out against that anti-democratic system - the sponging monarchy - with its rights of inherited title, power, privilege and wealth, the coterie of uniformed enforcers paid to keep protest at bay, and the corrupting effects of that collusion of hangers-on who make their billions dealing inside information as members of the old boys' clubs.

In fact, if you were serious, you would protest, resign, and join your fellow shivering citizens.

See you on the steps?

So you'd cut student tuition fees to £6,000. For how long? Can we say they'll be frozen at that level for the next 20 years?

Or is this just another smarmy interim offer from someone trying to get elected?

You mention the word "values" seven times here. Yet I come away from reading this with no better idea of what your values actually are.

This is 1,000 words of waffle. It leaves me with the strong impression you'd fit into the current cabinet just as easily as Nick Clegg or David Cameron. Perhaps you should form a new party for mid-40s careerists from elite backgrounds?
There's pages and pages of this sort of thing. Miliband really is the very definition of an empty suit; the very definition of why people who read PPE at Oxford should be automatically banned from holding political office of any kind.

The worst part, for me, is that he masturbates himself with the idea that Something Must Be Done about the energy companies. You were the fking Energy Secretary for nearly two years, you two-faced !

Let's not forget he's essentially a seat warmer for something worse.

It still utterly amazes me that he beat his brother to lead the Labour party. I know he had the backing of the unions and that swayed it but I would have thought even the unions would realise it's better to chose the best candidate rather than the one you're more cosy with. I know that sounds a bit naive but I always struggle to understand how supposedly intelligent people can be capable of such genuine stupidity.

Can someone not just start a political party based on common sense and intelligence rather than politics? I know the idiotic voting populace wouldn't vote for them anyway but at least I'd have somewhere to put my vote!

And just as reviled, they don't get it, people have had their fill of politicians of every hue, seen through their dishonesty and self serving behaviour.

Diana Abbot?

She is the most entertaining of the lot

I'd love her as PM

It would be worth the country collapsing just for the sheer giggles she would provide

Nope, UKIP are a "free icecream" party, like the BNP and the loonies. They can promise whatever ridiculous things they like, because they know they'll never ever have to deliver.

Me, I'd vote for a "We arrive at our policies with Science, and have a good sense of social justice" party.

And they always will be as long as people dismiss them like that, they're the best hope we have, why not give them a break

This is a party that last week elected Neil Hamilton to it's National Executive. If they are the best hope we have it is no hope.

They get dismissed like that because they write bks like this:

UKIP's policy page said:
Spend an extra 40% on defence annually, another 1% of GDP
For what?

Why do we need to spend another £18B on defence? Where's it to come from?

But that's OK, because they'll never ever be in the position to make that decision.

They might as well write, "We will ensure that every UK soldier is issued with a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range" for all the good it'll do.

As I've commented on a political thread somewhere else before, I have concerns that UKIP are little more than the BNP in a suit. That and as CJ says, sweeping statements and policies that sound good are fine but I need to see evidence that they are achievable before I could vote for someone.

This is what I'm talking about. I know it's a bit naive to hope for this but could someone for the love of all that is holy please just give it a go?

And I could quote equally daft comments, unsavoury candidates like Archer and dumb decisions from the other lot

The thing is, amongst the rest of the political spectrum there's only mirth at the boggly eyed fool. The left are incandescent with rage at his fecklessness.

You're absolutely right of course, but then again, I'd rather him then Milliband, the thought of whom as PM truly makes me shudder.................

Well, as much as I detest him he's statistically likely to be our next PM.

Oh yes, we're that retarded.

Politics is really the worse way to manage a country. Hardly any are qualified in any real sense and we see a hotch-potch of people being given roles they know very little about first-hand. The way people argue for a party line as opposed to what's the best thing to do is also a nonesense. Similarly every government spends two years undoing what the last lot did and two years to start their 5 year plan which will get overturned by the next government before it's had any effect; the last government will then spend 4 years honking and whinging at the current government who are either trying to extricate themselves from a situation the old ones put them in or are undoing all the good things the old lot did.
I really think the country should be run by a Question Time type balanced panel with a voting demograph that changes, like jury service...

At least Ghadaffi wore excellent suits.
