Retaining a plate off a sorned car

Tried phoning DVLA, that was a joke (5 minutes of menus & no human). All I need to know if if you can retain a plate off a car that has been sorned for over a year, the direct gov web page seems to indicate you can't, you must retain it within a year of its last tax disk (?) If this is the case & I have a motor that isn't going to get an MOT is the palte lost for good?

Why do you think you see some amazing plates in the scrap yard?

Once the MOT is gone you're screwed essentially! (not straight away, but soon enough you are!)

People used to get dodgy MOTs done and do the paperwork hoping they don't get an inspection visit!
