Guys/Girls

Ive just bought a 2nd hand Audi from a local garage and they are prepping it whilst i go away on holiday.

I was under the impression it was a standard FWD but on giving my reg plate to the insurance company, they say it is infact a 4wd

I know i can do a HPI check but is there anyone who can confirm the drivetrain for me if i give you the reg plate?

thanks

Look for a rear differential and/or half shafts?

Why not stick your head under it? If there's a diff at the back, then it's a Quattro. If not, it isn't?

Well, you should have done a HPI regardless but that's another topic.

Does it have Quattro written anywhere (outside rear, front grille, passenger side dash etc.).

As above, just look under the rear of the car for a diff (take photo and post up if need be).

Do you have the V5, what does that say?

Failing that, turn TC off, rev it high and dump the clutch. If you go nowhere and lots of tyre smoke from the front end then it's FWD. Otherwise, if you suddenly bolt forward, it's 4WD biggrin If you get no wheelspin and also stay stationary then you need a new clutch/gearbox biggrin

If you have an iPhone there is an app called MyCarCheck which lets you put the reg in to get some basic info for free. I presume the "quattro" bit would show up on there.

Problem is, if the data is wrong at the DVLA (or wherever) then the same misinformation may come up on any data checks. You need to look under the car to be sure.

get the garage who is prepping it to take a photo of the underside/rear of the car?

would there not be a transmission tunnel in the rear footwell as well??

I suspect you get the same transmission tunnel with both FWD and 4WD models. It would make little sense to have two floor pressings during manufacture. It's just the tunnel has no propshaft in it on the FWD versions.

The exhaust pipes will be split (a la 335i)but hidden under the rear valance if it's a quattro.

If they're together, it wont be a quattro.

Why can't you phone the garage and ask them?

It's quite possible that it is a quattro.

Put the reg in mycarcheck.com, if it says quattro in there thats what it was registered as.

Although possible, you won't *know* that. Could just an admin error.

Eh?! Is this a joke? DVLA are renowned for errors!

A mates had this recently, it was 2002 tdi sport fwd model, but it came up on the insurance database as a quattro although it wasn't, an explanatolion to the insurance company sorted it. Database error, as some were quattro whilst many weren't.
