Just Been Side Swipped By A Lorry
Discussion
Folks, just been side swiped by a lorry at a T junction. I was turning right under traffic light control, the lorry turning left at a give way. Basically its ended up me driving into an ever decreasing funnel of lorry and on coming traffic and my nearside mirror and door handles being ripped off somewhere around the back axles of the trailer (Tesco curtainsider) but no other real damage other than a few scratches where the door mirror has flailed about on it's wiring. The lorry didn't stop until I managed to overtake him about 1/2mile later on and forced him to stop. The black Skoda Octavia that was with me at the lights didn't stop so no other witnesses. The lorry driver is claiming that there was no collision and I was trying to defraud him. In the dusk light I couldn't see any obvious damage to the side of his lorry which TBH is hardly surprising.
Now with the lack of witnesses I'm going to struggle to get anything more than a 50/50 knock for knock, lose my excess, my no claims etc etc over a door mirror and a pair of door handles from a 1994 Jeep. So I take it on the chin, never buy from Tesco again and move on. My wife is away so I've spoken to a friend and my dad and I'm about to pour myself a stiff Scotch all to try to calm the nerves.
I guess the crux of this ramble is...do video cameras exist that continuously record say 60seconds to cache and if a remote button is pressed saved the video to a data card or such like so that some sort of record could be made in situations like I've just experienced??? Obviously you don't want it recording all the time for those frequent occasions of driving at 2leptons past a primary school at 0845 whilst calling someone on your mobile phone but...

Check out this http://www.roadhawk.co.uk/ (alternatives available, probably)
Had a similar thing from some haulage company. Phoned up their head office and they had a "Yeah, right, pull the other one" attitude.
Moral of the story is: if you think the lorry behind you is going to try to squeeze past because he thinks there's enough space and you're not so sure, then position yourself such that it is obviously impossible for him to squeeze past.

That would be down to the amount of false claims being put in these days.Sad but true so you would be unlikely to get anywhere without proof. All of our trucks are fitted with external cameras covering all angles.False litigation has been tried before and failed when it's pointed out the incident is all on camera and can be played back and used as evidence.Caught a naughty barrister out in London with these cameras. He pulled out into one of our trucks and started the wailing and threats of sueing the company.Soon shut up when the plod turned up and spoke to him about the incident being on camera and would he like to admit to pulling out lol.
Phone Tesco Customer Services and speak to someone about it. Ask to be put through to their distribution team if necessary. They'll have someone who deals with these sorts of claims.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Tesco lorries have cameras.
I was hit by a coach a few years back - smashed the wing mirror off my car but mercifully did no other damage. Bus driver said it was all my fault. I called their head office (they were a major UK operator) and within a few hours I had an email back telling me they'd checked the cameras and were happy to pay for the repairs.
So it's worth a call.

Yeah, I appreciate that there are plenty of scrotes out there. Shame people are so dishonest as it ruins things for people with a genuine complaint.

It was an agency truck, not marked up as such. The driver initially told me to kindly go forth and multiply or words to that effect and then when he realised I wasn't going to I got an incident form off him will all of Tesco's and their insurers details on. Offices close at 1730 sadly. Not what I needed as I'm moving house tomorrow. Ho hum.I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Tesco lorries have cameras.
Thanks for the link to the Road Hawk, I'll be getting one of them for just this scenario.

Tesco wagons won't have cameras.
Failing to stop is well and good too, chances are he didn't know he's hit you. Can only stop if he knows he's hit you.
If he was turning left at the junction why accelerate along side too? Wagons do take up more room than a car and back ends swing outward. I'd of stopped behind, let him finish his move then pull up at the lights.

Don't think you've quite grasped the scenario there. See the map here http://g.co/maps/m2xjj the lorry was on the A56 travelling from the north, I was turning right from the A5117. The A5117 is traffic light controlled, the A56 from the north is a give way (the only part of the junction that isn't traffic light controlled). Make better sense?

There are several Apps available for Android and probably Iphone that record GPS location Speed accelleration on all axis, video and audio.
Quiet a few are free and will record a cache of whatever you want to set, I have mine set to 2GB cache fo no other reason than I have a good 30gb free on my phone.
On some programs you can even set the g sensor to interpret sudden G Shock as an accident and save an incident file.
If you already have a smart phone its a good idea to just get one of this and a decent dashboard mount that allows the phone camera to see out the windscreen.

Maybe that just reads badly, but why on earth didn't you back off? There's no glory in trying to enforce your road position on a lorry. My other suggestion would normally be to ensure that you had a "proper" accident with lots of damage to both parties, but with a 1994 Jeep the damage done is probably already enough to render it a write off!

I did [back off] which is probably why contact was made around the rear axle as opposed to the side protection bars and potentially spewing me out into the oncoming traffic. I guess was level with his fuel tanks when I realised there was a problem. My other suggestion would normally be to ensure that you had a "proper" accident with lots of damage to both parties, but with a 1994 Jeep the damage done is probably already enough to render it a write off!
