Long story short, I am currentky carrying too much weight and struggle to motivate myself to lose it, so have decided on a public display in order to keep me motivated and do a bit of good for something close to my heart.

10 years ago on Saturday my dad started his chemotherapy. He had a rare form of leaukemia known as Hairy Cell. Luckily for us he has been in remission since.

Next year is his 65th birthday and i want to something to mark the occasion.

My plan is to do a sponsored slim running from now until July 4th of next year, working on my fitness at the same time. I then plan to do the 3 peaks to mark the date of his retirement. All in aid of Leaukemia Research.

I am thinking 4.5 to 5 stone is a reasonable figure to look at.

Any thoughts or advice? Am thinking of setting up a just giving page too.

Its too much to lose so quickly, join a local slimming group. It worked for my wife she has lost 6 stone but taken 18 months as she was sensible about it. Start running (walking at first), low fat diet and cycle where you can.

Best of luck I suspect it will be the best decision you have made. My wife thinks so, I mourn the loss of her big knockers though!

Look up MyFitnessPal and use it religously combined with eating well and a bit of exercise. Proof? I've lost 5 stone from January of this year. You can probably do 3 fairly easily. Good luck. smile

Cheers guys, and thanks to the mods - sorry for the wrong forum

For more info, I'm 6'3" and currently 22.5 stone. Final aim is 17 stone as my diabetes nurse has said she would be happy with this with my build

At that weight the first 2 or 3 will fall off.

And 17st is still VERY heavy unless you are very muscled. Over 6ft its easy to tell yourself 16/17/18 stone is fine because you are tall and "big built". But there are VERY few people of ANY height that at 17stone arent carry a chunk of extra fat somewhere!

Not saying I won't still be large, just saying that my diabetes nurse said that she would be happy with it. Body fat percentage is about 5 percent lower than the BMI says it is!

As for big built, I was a 44" chest when I was 13 and I wasn't fat then. THe point is to lose some weight and get fit in order to complete the challenge as a way of motivating myself.

I will decide on my ultimate goal once I have made some progress wink

Good on you for giving it a go OP. I'm 6'4" and was 19 stone, I'd recommend looking at doing the NHS's couch to 5k. I started out this way and I'm now running 4 miles at least 3 times a week. If you haven't heard of it it's a series of free podcasts designed to fet pretty much anyone running for 30 mins at least 3 times a week. You build up gradually so you don't go too hard too fast and become discouraged and pack in.

Being your size there's allot of stress on your joints etc with risk of injury so maybe initally low impact is the better option, but touch wood I've had no issues and give myself a rest day in between long runs.
