fk st piss damn and blast.

Got a bit over enthusiastic on a damp roundabout tonight in the MX5 and to cut a long story short, I've made a bit of a mess.

Was going quite well until the back end decided to grip unexpectedly spearing me in towards the middle of the roundabout to be stopped only by one of the barriers in the middle. Hit it at quite an angle on almost full oppositte lock and took the front p/s sidelight out, but now I've also got quite a wobble going on through the steering wheel.

Taking it straight to the garage tomorrow... any ideas what i should expect to hear?

I'm gutted, first accident I've had in a very long time.

I did something similar in a focus. The arse end just let go, but luckily it was a wide roundabout and nobody was around. I ended up facing the wrong way without hitting anything.

Ive found that the newer focuses are terrible in this aspect, they always feel like they want to let go at the back end.

Any pics of the damage, OP? If it's very minor then with a bit of luck it might just have knocked the tracking out. Otherwise I'd have thought suspension damage? Hope it's not too serious anyway smile

Possibly a broken steering arm? Easy enough to do and feels very odd.

confused

How on earth do you crash an MX5 - aren't they the best handling car in the world?

Did the OP not spot the mushroom cloud from the explosion? smile.

It's a message from god letting you know he's not happy with homosexuals driving.

OP - joking aside I would suggest that you prepare for a letter off your council if you have hit some street furniture and there were any witnesses/CCTV.

Obviously I don't know the full situation, just thinking worst case scenario I guess.

So actually you did nothing like the OP? Glad we cleared that one up.

As an afterthought, if the back end suddenly found grip, wouldn't it tend to throw the car to the outside of the rounabout rather than the middle of it? Presuming you were already sliding with some opposite lock on. Sounds like you simply overcooked it..........

Hope the damage isn't too bad. I spun mine on a wet roundabout a few weeks back and put it up on the grass. Lucklily the only damadre was a scuffed alloy, a slight knocking out of the tracking and a dented ego.

Denfinately not. Buckled wheel, probably- and tracking damage.

How about, "You've made a right mess of that, haven't you?"

Get yourself on a skidpan course or something, now. The arse end does not "just let go" on modern FWD cars unless something is broken, or you, I dunno, charge into a corner too fast and get off the throttle in a panic half way round.

Actually, high speed lane change tests with no ESP tend to yield quite interesting results in many recent Fords, even some Mazda's which share the same platforms...

As for on a roundabout, you have to be doing something wrong (snapping the throttle shut with a bit of understeer for example) but it's arguably far more likely to happen in a Focus than any of it's rivals.

I did similar(ish) trying to avoid some tt alongside me on the motorway and caught the kerb on the central reservation in a 306 and bent the wishbone, destroyed the TRE and took a lump out of an alloy.

Not much fun and cost around £200 I think to sort it all out + £45 for an alloy off ebay. Doubt it'll be vastly expensive and mine included tracking reset and a complete bottom arm with balljoint/bushes.

Try it in a Mk2.5 Focus Estate with the boat anchor 2.0TDCI in the front, on 205-55/16 low resistance tyres. Not fun I can assure you. New pants time after that one.
