Started tonight, anyone watching?

IMO this is the best of the Masterchef bunch of programs, Roux jnr is a great judge, shame we still get the fat grocer. No India Fisher this time, seems weird with a male voiceover.

Not watching as at work but hopefully the OH has set the Sky box for it. I enjoy this more than either of the other Masterchefs too.

Shameless brag - I met Roux Jnr at Le Gavroche earlier in the year. He is as nice as he comes across on the TV, lovely chap.

Felt sorry for the prison guy tonight, OK he was a pro chef, but teaching cookery in prison, when would've been the last time he'd have spun sugar?

It would have ended up all over an inmates face! I missed the start, I wasn't aware there was a prison chef there but I did see the bloke who worked on an oil rig the other night.

I quite enjoyed tonight's show though. Sebastian was good, as was the skinny lad with dark hair (Oli?). I'm just glad Roux Jnr. is back. He is the real star of the show, though it's a shame Wallace makes a return instead of Torode, as he really knows his stuff. Roux Jnr. is great though, very encouraging and polite yet utterly masterful. He never comes across as arrogant, and is one of my favourite TV personalities.

Monica Galetti is a joy too. She obviously knows her craft inside out, though I wonder if she is as stern in real life as she comes across on the show. I suspect it's entirely possible, as when you're the gate keeper for a kitchen full of chefs and you answer to a man of Roux Jnr's talent I suspect your standards are kept mercilessly high! I wonder though, if she and Wallace receive a bonus for every daft gurning face they pull whilst they watch the chefs do something wrong. A stern look would suffice, but some of the expressions used are becoming pantomime!

Some great chefs on last nights show.

All in all, i thiunk the standard has been pretty damn high this year.

This is definitely my favourite of the masterchef shows, the amateur one has gone downhill pretty badly and the celeb one has always been a bit duff...

Agreed, Army chef was a class act.

The two that went through last week were class acts too, both very young, the girl just out of college and Roux Jr was asking her for recipies!

This is looking like it's going to be a good contest smile

There's been a great mix of surprisingly good chefs (the young girl just out of college, for example) and the wonderfully over-confident and under-talented.

Enjoying it a lot.

I've just watched the one where they had to pluck the pidgeon.

What? You mean you're not supposed to cut the head off with a pair of scissors?!

I was cringing the whole way through that, you could see the skin literally being ripped from the breast. I've not prepped a pidgeon since I was 15 (am 36 now) but could still remember the basics that these guys hadn't a clue about - and they're supposed to be professional chefs!!
I like the army guy - his cooking seems really good and that young girl who's just finished college I think has a fantastic career ahead of her!

I couldn't believe what I was hearing when she said how long she's been out of college! I can't see her winning, but bloody hell she has a real eye for food.

I once had an X-mas job plucking Turkeys by hand for a small farm. Seeing those torn pigeons sent me in to a cold sweat. Any rips on the Turkeys were dealt with in a manner just short of a kick in the nuts

"I'm just sad because I didn't get chance to show what I could do"

Without fail, every fecking chef that gets booted off says the above.

You got THREE fkING CHANCES TO SHOW WHAT YOU COULD DO.

My thoughts exactly. IMHO for professional chefs there were some very dodgy plates of food this week. Can't wait for next week and some proper tasks and cooking to begin.

The standard this week has been noticeably lower than on previous weeks, but that Ash bloke has been really impressive. He's shown some great technical skills and is turning out plates of food that look like something from a top restaurant, whereas some of the others have produced some very poor efforts, and the presentation has often been amateurish at best. I think Wallace's comments that his food is lacking "big flayvahs" is just meaningless fluff to add some balance to the strong praise Ash deserves.

I was saying exactly the same thing to my colleagues just now at lunch, actually. Same comment every time!

Here's a question for you knowledgeably foodies....Just what IS that brown bar of stuff Roux Jr sniffs during the stock footage they play every episode before one of the classic recipe challenges? It comes out of a tub and he shows it to his group of junir chefs and gives it a good whiff. It's been bugging me since the last series, never mind this one! Looks like a hairy bar of toffee.

I thought it might be a little bar of tamarind or something. I could well be wrong though.
