Hi all, just looking for a bit of advice here really. I purchased a car from a dealer on the 17th of August and I am starting to notice problems now that I have been able to drive the car more. The car in question is a Renault Clio 182 FF.

Now I haven't had the chance to use the car properly as I have only used it for dual carriageway commutes to and from my Offshore training courses. I have now used the car on the back roads around my house and I am starting to find problems.

Anytime I go round a corner now the back end doesn't feel great and I have been informed this probably leaking dampers
The rear tyres are wearing at quite a quick rate
There looks to have been crash damage to the front passenger side
The exhaust clamp has gone
The exhaust mounts are past it
The heatshield is knocking on the exhaust
The rear discs are needing replaced/ pads almost down to the metal
Handbrake cable only seems to work on one side
There is also a high pitched squealing noise from the front drivers side wheel too.

Now that I have time to do things I was wondering. Do car dealers have to check over cars before they are allowed to be sold on the road? If so could I have any comeback if this hd not been done?
I don't feel safe whilst driving especially incase any of the problems worsen.

Have i got a leg to stand on to get the dealer to sort these parts? I am contemplating putting the car through an AA/RAC check to make sure that the car should be allowed on the road. If there is any faults in the results then could this go back to the dealer also as I am paying for a car that is obviously not safe.

What did the dealer say when you raised these issues?

You have spoken to them, haven't you?

First off have a read here and know what your rights are: http://www.oft.gov.uk/business-advice/treating-cus...

-Then speak to the dealer politely and see what's what. Don't go in all guns blazing, but be positive, firm and polite.

-Be realistic too, far too many people on here seem to think that a less than perfect used car means the seller know owes them a Kings ransom and a years slavery. Decide what do you want to get out of this.

-Write everything down and keep a record of what happens.

some of these items should have been picked up in the original purchase? or have they come about since you bought it?

Sorry to p1ss on your chips, but I cant see anything on your list that I think the dealer would be liable for. Especailly given the time that has now passed.

If you are worried about it get a fresh MOT done this will help tell you if its safe or not.
Also if it came with a new MOT when you bought it, and lets say for arguments sake you have done less than 1,000 miles since then you might be able to tell if there is anything that failed today, that should not have passed less than 1,000 miles ago? But heat sheilds, clamps, Shocks and stuff like that can be fine a few months ago and not now regardless of mileage.

The only thing this might helps with is, if the tyres are a blantent fail today but were not even advised a few 100 miles ago, same for the brake pad/discs. If this is the case its the MOT tester that might have some liabilities, but not quite sure how that would work as I've never come accross it.
