DVLA tax check

Saw my first official "DVLA TAX CHECK" vehicle today. Parked in a layby on a dual carriageway, it was a silver VX Astra estate with what looked like HATO decals (yellow/red chevrons), and a big sticker on the boot reading "DVLA TAX CHECK". The car had a large camera mounted on a tripod stationed behind it in the layby.

Good job I remembered to renew my tax at the end of last month.

Are these common around the country now?
