Saab Sale: GM Says No

New setback in the Saab sell-off saga as GM spits the intellectual property dummy

General Motors has thrown a massive corporate spanner into the works of the deal to sell Saab to Youngman and Pang Da, repeating its previous threats that it would block the sale of the company to the Chinese car makers.

GM isn't just being a jealous ex, of course - everything Saab currently produces (or would produce, if it was making anything) relies heavily on GM components, and The General is clearly concerned about the safety of its intellectual property.

"Although General Motors is open to the continued supply of powertrains and other components to Saab under appropriate terms and conditions," says GM spokesman Jim Cain, "GM will not agree to the continuation of the existing technology licenses or the continued supply of 9-4X vehicles to Saab following the proposed change in ownership as it would not be in the best interests of GM shareholders."

Rather puts the kibosh Saab's £90m deal, doesn't it? "We have to go back to the drawing board," says Saab CEO Victor Muller.

That's such a shame. Would be sad to see the SAAB brand vanish altogether.

Kind of ironic, seeing as most of the profit-making technology GM sells in Europe these days is licensed from FIAT...

Erm maybe I'm being a bit dim but surely if they force SAAB to go under they will definitely sell no parts to them at all?

I have become increasingly partial to that new Saab since they placed on as the headmaster's car on "Waterloo Road". Product placement does work.

Its not the point of parts alone it's the research and development that went into them, if they supply China for 6months all the components will then be copied and made there so basically the Chinese company that is trying to buy them gets a fully developed product line that GM has paid for all R&D.

I didn't know that can you be more explicit, what technology do GM licence from Fiat ?

Isn't the Fiat diesel technology licensed to various people?

More pertinently, they already use these platforms themselves in China and don't fancy the idea that their own technology will be used in a competitor's product.

It's surly just all political? It'd be easy enough for the Chinese to copy the technology anyway as demonstrated by the Daewoo Matiz clone! Strikes me that they effectively just don't want Saab to exist when they couldn't make it work! Almost like a Jealous Ex!

"Product placement does work"

Not if you have a mind of your own.

Saab is dead on its arse, this is more humiliating than the Rover saga.

Nothing to do with a mind of your own, it allows a product to be seen on the raod from different angles and makes you aware of something you might otherwise not consider. Forget the Saab link for a minute, that's not really relevant to becoming more aware of a product. You can still reject it on other grounds if it's all looks and no substance.

I'm now actually wondering where certain car makers would actually be without product placement. After all, some could say that Aston has been dinning out on the whole Bond thing for quite sometime now

Great, well done GM. Shafted SAAB for years and basically devalued the brand and it's products to the point that it has now become. Now not content with that, you want to stick the knife in and turn it.

Yes that may be the case but, GM are not supporting the SAAB or Cadillac cause properly in the UK, SAAB produced the Cadillac BLS under GM's guidance and SAAB/Vauxhall parts bin, just try and get one diagnostically checked and you'll get nowhere locally, not unless you live near one of three garages in England doing so, even then the chances of getting the BLS and CTS parts quickly are remote indeed!

At least if the Chinese got there hands on SAAB they might well do what Cadillac are not doing, that is, give proper support to BLS owners who deserve better from GM!

If the Chinese can't buy it then SAAB owners will end up in the same boat as Cadillac owners, stuffed!!!

Actually it's people who do have a mind of their own who buy, or at least used to buy Saabs.

I agree, Saab used to be the thinking mans choice, but i can't help thinking that GM destroyed that something in Saab that made them that little bit different.
