Alternative 80s on MTV Classic

Only caught the last seven tracks, but hell... Depeche Mode, Bowie, The Clash, The Stone Roses, The Jam, Joy Division and The Smiths, of course, at number 1. So refreshing to have some real music back on the channels.

I've set it to record in full, its next on at 11am on Thursday if anyone is interested.

I have just 'discovered' Joy Division (at the age of 44!), some amazing tracks I never knew about - also The Fall (Just bought 4 of their albums..) - part by way of 6 Music and the channel you mention.

Was watching a bit of 'Vintage TV' (a music channel) last night - my God it made me feel old!

One of the best bands of all time, Joy Division. Their two studio albums are absolute classics. Nice Tamora sir, fine taste.

LOL! I'm 45 and regret not seeing them when they played Walthamstow Youth Centre in 1979, deciding not to bother going for some reason 50p to get in too.

Yes, Unknown Pleasures & Closer are just amazing albums, also check out Still which has the awesome Sound of Music on it.

I never bothered buying Still as there's not a great deal extra on the album than Substance 1977-1980, which was already in the CD collection. That's when legal downloading comes into its own.

I have Closer (Re-mastered), Still (Collector's edition - whatever that means..) and Substance. I will be buying more. (Also bought The Smiths - Complete)

@ Robsco - I sold that Tamora, worst decision I ever made - but now I'm back in the UK (was in Italy), I will get another.

A lot of '80's 'Alternative' music, that first aired on the John Peel shows still sound great - I even think that the Joy Division's output has stood the test of time better than New Order's, as a lot of the latter's material is very 'of the time', as opposed to 'timeless', IMOHO

If you've bought The Smiths complete, your life will be engulfed for years. Even the early demos are beyond the kin of 99% of bands at their peak, there'll never be another band like them.

Closer is such a beautiful haunting album. I still play it regularly.

As for The Smiths, I was lucky to see them live back in the day, although funnily enough I probably like them more now than I did back then - my 15yr old son is also a big fan.

There was so much amazing music in the 80s - some of it was very cheesy but there was an undercurrent of experimental, innovative, dark, moving, pure genius (especially early 80s).
