winter tyre sizes for 16 inch spiders?

Hi. I've some 16 inch spiders for winter tyres for my daily drive Mk 1 Tuscan. The handbook says 225/50 and 225/55 VR 16 for front and back respectively but I can't source 225/50 winter tyres at the moment

Any ideas? Why the different profile front and back?

On a separate note should I keep in my SP spacers on the front with 16s?

All advice appreciated; I can't leave it off the road in winter - must have my fix!

I recently bought Toyo Snowproxes in those sizes from www.mytyres.co.uk - don't know if they have more.............

On Mytyres I just bought some 225/50s but no 55s. Bizarrely my tyre man can get 55s but not 50s. Should be ok for the snow now...
