My 1977 Taimar (Essex 3l V6) is stilling running on the lead replacement petrol which is becoming harder to find and is restricting where I take the car (just incase I can't find any for the jurney home). I've heard about pellets being put into petrol tanks which then allow the use of unleaded petrol. Are these pellets any good, or should I only consider a proper converstion?

I've heard from lot's of sources that the pellets aren't any good. I use an additive in mine, Castrol Valvemaster plus, which is also an octane booster. You can get it from Halfords for £9.99 and treats 250 litres of fuel. I've been using it for quite a few years and have had no problems. There are 2 other MIRA endorsed recommended additive's, one by Redline and the other is Millers VSP Plus.

Why are you using LRP?? You can get real 4 star from any bayford thrust garage. Look at their website and they list all of the genuine 4 star suppliers.

Some people don't realise that real 4 star is still legally available for sale by licensed suppliers in limited quantity.

Also. If you are caught in between fill ups then the odd tank of unleaded will not do any harm at all.

tetra ethyl lead attaches to the engine internals and takes a good few thousand miles to "wash off"

The other option if you are really paranoid is to run unleaded and Millers. There are about 4 other (from memory) endorsed by the FHBC, but millers is probably the best and most widely available via halfords etc.

I forgot to add..

don't be in a hurry to carry out an unleaded conversion. You might as well use anything in your tank and knacker your existing heads first prior to a conversion. The work involved will be exactly the same.
