I am in the fortunate position of having £5k to spend on the chim. While I would love to spend it fettling the engine my head tells me to get everything else sorted as its really showing its age. Here's my list and what I *think* the costs should be, will I get this for £5k or am I dreaming ?

I already have ACT induction pipes, gaz golds and rose jointed droplinks.

Replace outriggers £2000
New carpets (inc fitting) £800
New Hood (complete including recover of top) inc fitting £800

Leaving £1400 - I would love a full respray but I suspect I will need at least £4k for that alone ? Maybe for my £1400 I could get some new front light pods fitted (covred like the later chims) and some of the front resprayed maybe wings and bonnet ?

Any recommendations for people to do the work above welcome. Currently thinking str8six for the chassis, AJ Trimming for the rest. Both suppliers are close to me and I have heard good things about them (but not used them before)

No idea if my estimates are accurate .....

Hi Dodsy, I think for that money a full chassis refurb with everything changed, and piece of mind aswell. I think Jason uses a chassis specialist near Newark, Lincs I believe. Good Luck with spending your money wisely.

£5k - I'd have the body off and chassis properly sorted.

Then save another £5k for paint/carpets etc.

Let's say, and I have no idea about your car, that it's worth £8k in its current state. Surely an option is to sell it and then spend £13k on a newer car with a well sorted chassis and paintwork
If for arguments sake it was worth £8k as say a 96 400, then the extra cash could land you a 99 450?

I thought about this. Its a 97 450. Mechanically no expense spared, all the usual upgrades and enhancements but cosmetically shes looking her age. And the outriggers are on the way out. Unlikely to make a good price. For me its better the devil you know, I have had her 6 years now and dont want to part company - there is always a chance that I sell it, add on the £5k to buy something newer then end up with an expensive problem. At least with my car I know that the £5k will bring it back up to cosmetic spec to match the mechanicals.

That's correct. They outsource their chassis work to Willow Sportscars in Newark. I can highly recommend Willow: that's where I got my full chassis refurb done. First class work. Nick there is an ex-TVR man and is a good chap - give him a call.

just had quote for full respry £2500 from revival/powers

had carpet hand trimmed for £500

and roof £300 ish from Gary at hoods and trims.

cannot really coment on the rest.

question i would ask my self is, is the car a keeper for a long time? as said above, i personally would save the 5k and add it the the funds gained from selling your current car and buy one already sorted. IMHO

cheers

I think ou have over budgeted somewhat.

Outriggers for a good job no more than 1.5k

As stated above, roof and carpets for probably less than 1k.

You are then almost there for a full respray.

I agree with you, if its a keeper, keep hold of this one and do the work. Like you say better the devil you know.
