TomTom GO 720 help!

Hi all,

(Sorry if this has been answered before.)

My TomTom GO 720 is continually shutting down, and I can't get my Mac to 'find' it to load any updates. It'll plug in alight, but then TomTom Home keeps saying that it's not connected, when it is. Very irritating. Anyone got any ideas? Be gentle though, I'm a moron with technology.

It may sound silly, but have you tried the old 'reset' trick?

If not, find the reset hole in the bottom of the device (will be a 1-2mm hole with reset written near it) and push a pin lightly into it until you feel it resist.

Mine used to refuse to connect about every 3 months, and this was the only way to fix it.

Otherwise have you tried putting your cable into a different USB slot, as one may not be providing a good connection (dodgy cable, plug, socket, etc.).

I have the same satnav and find the connection can be poor between it and the cradle, it doesn't charge even though the green light is on properly. Suggest you leave it to charge for half an hour as mine just turns off when the battery gets too low.

If you turn it on and set a route then press the bottom right of the screen it should show you if the battery is charging or not

Thanks to both of you for taking the time to respond. We've just noticed that the SD card is missing...I know I'm a dunce but what effect would this have?

In mine no sd card, it has no map and won't work

Haven't got a 720 to test anymore, but my 730 (and I'm sure it was the same on all my other TTs before) had on-board maps, and worked whether the 'blanking plate' SD card was in or not.

I only put an SD card in there when I wanted to put another region on - or when the map updates became too big for the onboard storage.

I still got my 720, it's one of the best TiTs out there and you can get free map updates etc.... and it does work with or without SD card, that was originally designed for extra large maps that wouldn't fit into main memory eg. Entire Europe maps, then they added music player etc.

Weak point in these might well be the battery at this age, but that's easy to test. Charge it via ANY mini-usb charger car or home will work, the see how long it takes to discharge or if it dies when you disconnect, then battery is dead. They can be changed but it's not easy, search youtube for howto videos... worth doing though... mine's due for one...

system 1.8.351 is the most reliable and works good with latest maps if you know what you're doing. Forget Bluetooth, it's too flaky. Bad MP3s also make it reboot spontaneously. you can plug it in to your puter and access main memory and the SD cards just like disk drives, so maybe a Chkdsk is in order... or reload the maps from a backup if you have one.
