I've recently found out that I can claim tax relief for cleaning my work uniform and should also be able to claim it back for the past five years.

To go about this do I just need to send a letter to my local tax office along with copies of my P60's for the past five years?

I've seen that there's companies online who will do the claim for you but take 20-25% of any claim that you get. I figured that it couldn't be that difficult so might be worth trying myself.

Anyone know how I need to go about it?

Phone HMRC and explain your situation to them. Don't forget that you may need to furnish proof of the expenditure on cleaning when making the claim.

Thanks for that, Eric.

I'll give them a call and see what I need to do.

Thought I'd reply as I've just opened a letter from hmrc telling me they've increased my personal allowance for the next 12 months to allow me to claim back 5 years of professional fees.

I just wrote to the paye office in Liverpool IIRC outlining the amounts involved and my last P60. Thought I might have issues as it was a fairly large amount but it was no problem. Took about two weeks for them to come back to me

Why don't you ask for a direct refund of the tax they owe you rather than having them take twelve months to give it to you?

You are perfectly entitled to the cash up front.
