Hi guys,

Not to sure where to post this so I thought GG was as good a place as any.

I am going to a VW Dealer tomorrow to look at buying a new Golf for my sister.

She is currently interested in the Cabriolet although I am trying to sway her into the one of the 2.0 GTDs.

Now this is the first time I will be going into a main dealer with the intention of buying a spanking new motor. However, I have heard from many friends, relatives and PH'ers about the wonderful deals they have got form main dealers using their awesome skills of negotiating.

Now without looking like a tight arse I am wondering how much I could possibly be looking at getting off book price with a bit of bargaining?

If anyone could give a rough ballpark figure so I have something to aim at rather than taking the piss and asking for something ridiculous that would be great.

The Cabriolet is circa £26K Book price and the GTD is 24K Book price.

Cheers

If there are any stock vehicles which are to your liking then you might be able to get 1-1.5k off although both are vehicles in demand and if they are factory orders then you will be waiting 4-5 months for delivery anyway and 1k off tops

See if any pack cars are available, definitely won't be any cabs but you might drop lucky with a GTD, then you could get 3-4k off but have to take whats available

start at 18k, the worst they can do is laugh at you, but given they won't have sold a car for the last month I bet you walk out with either for under 22k!!

FYI, I recently bought a car from a dealer up for £7995 for £5500 and they gave me £3500 for my Cat C'd Trade in with 65k on the clock!

They were offering some new cars with £10k off the list price!!

Aim low and stick to it, they say no you can move up.

If you go in at £22k and they bite your arm off you will always wonder!!

whatever they offer, drop it by £2k until they start scurrying off to their boss and coming back with an absolutely not we can't possibly go any lower, then offer £500 less than that, holding your hand out repeatedly saying "go on, you know you want to"

First rule of negotiating. If your inital offer doesnt embarrass you its not low enough.

If paying cash then I suspect the GTD won't have much room on it but the cab might have a little at this time of year if they need to shift some. If paying by finance then you should be able to get a couple of thousand off.

Best bet is to check the internet broker prices and see what they offer then see if the dealer can meet you in the middle.

Wrong. Brand new unregistered cars that dealer / groups have bought and paid for upfront with manufacturer - big savings to dealer.

Dealer can elect to still sell at as close to list as possible but most are happy to negotiate most of it away

My advice would be this....

Go and see the dealer, and start some negotiations with them. Whatever the final outcome, walk away.

At the moment, cars just aren't selling and all dealers are finding it tough. My guess would be that he dealer will be back on the phone towards the end of he month when they're being pushed by VW to shift some metal

+1. I did this when helping my mum buy her new car. I felt like a wally and mum was a bit uncomfortable about walking away from "the nice man"... but I got phonecalls back from 2 of the 3 dealers we tried it in.

No need to be mean to the sales staff... just "We'll go and have a coffee and think it over" is enough.

When I was selling VW, a few years ago now (2002 - 2003) we usually had around 8% of the pre VAT price to negotiate to, although we always aimed at no more than 5% unless we had a genuine deal to beat.

Like others have said pre reg and pack cars are different but IME at VW they tended to be older spec cars.

Hasn't the new golf cab only just been released? If so I wouldn't have thought there would be a massive amount of room for negotiation.

No!

A "pack" car is where a manufacturer offers a dealer a great deal but they have to buy a "pack" of say 10 cars.

Dealer would have very little say on what cars are in the pack.

Often old spec cars when a model upgrade comes out.

My negotiation now consists of printing the best price off from Drive The Deal, taking into the dealership and asking "can you do this or not?".

I agree, take the lowest price quoted on the online brokers as the one to aim for.

Cabriolet is a better buy than a GTD, the residuals they are predicting are really high resulting in some very cheap PCP/ Lease deals been offered.

I tried that in a VW dealer once, and the salesman said "I don't think we'll be able to do business, sir" and guided me to the door! Exactly the same thing happened to a colleague of mine in a different VW dealer.

I recently bought a pack VW Golf Twist for my daughter and feel we got a pretty good deal in the end but they really, really, really wanted to sell it on finance, and I've heard stories of VW dealers turning cash customers away.

I don't know the current situation, but earlier in the year some diesel Golf models were on near 12 mths leadtimes. Someone said earlier they won't have sold a car all month, but look at the monthly sales figures, Golf is selling well. I guess you could use long leadtimes to argue both ways; why discount them, but also it must be hard to get people to commit to buy with leadtimes like that without an incentive.

Best way to see prices is look at DriveTheDeal or Broadspeed (Broadspeed is owned by Inchcape and they have a number of VW dealerships).

Some VW dealers list stock online - this is Ridgeway group: http://www.volkswagennow.co.uk/search.html
