St patricks day - Ireland
Discussion
After destroying my knee a few weeks ago I will not be skiing this season, I would like to go to Ireland for a few days around St patricks day. I'm thinking of driving (classic mini) getting an overnight ferry from Swansea to Cork and working up to Dublin via other cities and ferry back from Dublin to liverpool?
I have been to Galway before and maybe would like to be there for St patricks day? Any other suggestions for best cities for that day?
Any suggestions for how to reduce ferry costs? A quick look reveled very high prices. I'd also like to visit the Guiness factory. Will this need pre booking considering the time of year?

Swansea Cork ferries has gone bust, will not resurface til April. Paddies Day is always 17th march.
Come Fishguard ( Stena )/Pembroke ( Irish Ferries ) to Rosslare , book online direct and early. Sails 2pm and 2 am appx.
Cork has good parade, I live there, and good pubs. Visit West Cork, the Rally is on then.
Dublin better parade and liverly crowd.
Google Guiness Tours.
Lots to see and do in Cork, what do you want ?

I want a good night out. Genuine, real Irish feel to it. Went to Galway when I was younger and loved the dark cost pubs with impromptu violin and piano playing and singing, great atmosphere, things to see and walks in the day. 2 - 3 days working from south to Dublin for the Guiness tour. Like wildcard suggestions like seeing a rally (do u mean as in motorsport, or is that something to do with the festivities?!?!)
Nice b&bs and sights to see along the way, restaurants, beaches, anything really. OH never been to Ireland, I went once, working for 3 days 7 years ago.

Leave it with me and I'll work on some suggestions.
Re B&Bs, I used use these years ago but with our economy et al the rates you get in hotels are hard to beat nowadays. St Patricks Weekend , I know its a mid week day, will be a bit more expensive.
What part of the UK ru coming from, my first 3 cars were minis, model years 1965 bought in 1972, 1968 bought in 1973.

Yorkshire , ok so , best come to/ from Dublin Port. Stena/irish Ferries. If you book a month at least in advance it will be cheaper. Wait until the ferries give their spring prices, subscribe to their email notices.
Look around for accommodation early, stay in Dublin your first night and St Pats Night.
Next Day drive south through Wicklow and Stay in Waterford or Wexford Towns.
Next Waterford via Lismore and the Vee , stay in the outskirts of Cork City ( Vienna Woods Hotel Glanmire, Radisson Blu Little Island, Silversprings Hotel or Montenotte Hotel ) All these have free parking.
Check for dates for West Cork Rally, its on the Sat and Sunday and has some super machinery including a great historic section. Its based in West Cork town of Clonakilty, accommodation would be hard to find, loads of B&B here but need to book early Jan 2012.
Drive along the stages the day after the rally along the Coast South to Skibbereen/ Schull.
Then return via Rosslare to Wales or Dublin to Holyhead from where you came day 1.
Petrol is £1.20 here at present.
Our tourist Board is called Failte Ireland.
I live in Cork, say Hello when you pass.

Cheers. Yorkshire and it's a 1993 mini which inherited a few months ago - love it!
You could try Belfast Stranraer if you are in York. Will be cheapest ferry. An overnighter in Belfast ?
As in the Republic some cracking deals on hotels.
Belfast - Dublin is all motorway now ...bit dull in a classic mini.
In the north, Belfast/ Armagh/Downpatrick have best Paddys day parades.
