Hi

Nothing serious I hope but out for a spin on Wednesday and all was fine until I switched off for five mins.

On returning and when I tried starting the car it sort of half turned over then started almost like the car had a flat battery.

Voltage was around 13.3 as normal and again it did exactly the same later on.....

Any thoughts?

Also went to pop the bonnet and nothing..... Catch moved but nothing. I see on here that people say oh just get a screwdriver but is that ok to do to investigate?

Over to you now oh clever ones........

Could be the starter motor getting too hot and sticking slightly, or just the wiring to it isn't in great condition and again is suffering with the heat. Chims suffer with this a fair bit although i'm not sure it's such a common thing on the S6 cars.

Take the car for a long drive, and when back home, start it up again. If it struggles then leave it to cool and try again from cold and see if it's any better, if so then the battery is probably ok and it's heat/starter/wiring related.

Oh, and welcome to the TVR world! Plenty of locals around to lend a hand in hamps/berks etc. Where did you buy it from?

Welcome Mark!

You will never loose the grin!

When I first bought mine a 18months ago, had to take car to Str8six because could not open bonnet. Felt like such a newbie, which I still am really! Loads of help from friendly people here though!

Bonnet: With driver's door open, pull and hold open bonnet catch under steering column with left hand and then lift bonnet with right hand at same time. I am sure there is a way to rectify this but have not yet found out as so minor.

Best,

Stephen

Mine has done exactly the same thing on a couple of occasions - has always started (so far....) and I also think it must be a heat thing. Would be interested to hear what answer you get though.

As for the bonnet catch, mine is just more of a bonnet lock than anything else - pull lever, then just pull open bonnet (remembering to manoeuvre it around the drivers side wiper rolleyes)

Enjoy it , sounds like batt is a bit low both my T cars have done this and an overnight charge will sort or you will know new batt needed. Volts should reach 14.4 ish if healthy .Bonnet is a pain, as above pull and lift at same time.I fitted a new bonnet catch on my T350T

Mine does this after a long run or a really hot day, it's defiantly heat soak to the starter, I've never had it not start but it sometimes can strain (and can seem like a flat battery).

I stopped at a petrol station in Belgium to fill up and was very lucky to get the car started as the starter motor turned very very slowly. The engine caught on the very first spin of the starter. From the sound of it the starter wouldn't have been able to spin round twice. I replaced the starter motor and have had no more problems. Car has done 20.000 miles.

when i bought mine i had the same hot start problems, had a new uprated starter motor fitted under warranty,& its been perfect ever since, even back in the summer when the car was red hot,i think that if you have an original starter motor replacing it with an uprated starter motor is a wise move.

You guys never ever let me down .........

I ask.... You tell!

I will have a chat with Jason at str8six and get it sorted as after three weeks ownership it gives me the willies!

Strange day Wednesday just gone three things happened...

1/ drove around a fast corner to find lady in the middle of the road waving because horse was going mad..... Looked in mirror and old shed of an astra was locked up smoke pouring from his front wheels heading my way... He did stop phew
2/ bonnet would not open.
3/ struggled starting hot at petrol station.

Smile gone for the first time but it's Sunday tomorrow and I'm sure all will be good.

Also Specialsed car cover has now arrived. £375 later but wow. Fits like an indoor stretch close fitting cover with no wrinkles!,

Now all cross your fingers for Sunday starting.....

Update.......

So my 4 year old son helped me wash the car Sunday morning..... All looking good and started as normal.

Went for an epic drive/slide A32 and A272 around that sort of area and over to the famous Loomies cafe. It was full and I mean full of around 75 odd bikers...... Heal and toe.....pops and bangs and every gear change spot on in front of my audience.

Felt amazing until my son said.... It's too loud daddy!

Must admit I did not try and re start when hot as was having too much fun. The very helpful and nice guy I brought the car from Jimmydk on here emailed saying battery was new in January this year so must be heat/wires or starter related.

Saw four other TVR's out today on those famous roads..... Must try and find out where you all meet.

Specialised Car cover also arrived this week. Not cheap at £375 but well worth every penny when you see and fit it. It is just like one of the indoor close fitting no wrinkle ones but fleece lined and fits like a ... Er car cover!

So smiles have returned just need to get bonnet fixed and all good...... Pull lever lift bonnet at same time..... Nope !

Cheers for all your help ..... You guys need more thank you's as you really are a bloody useful lot.

I suspect it was the Hampshire TVRCC you saw - meet is second Sunday of every month (so would have been last weekend), just off the A272 east of Winchester. Can't remember the pubs name (and haven't got round to going myself yet!) but it is on the TVRCC website.

With the bonnet catch thing, when you pull the lever under the steering column, does it stay in the "pulled" position or spring back into place? Mine stays open, so I can then walk round to the side of the car, grab the bonnet at the catch, wiggle it from side to side a bit and hey presto, it opens. Wouldn't be able to do this if I was trying to pull the lever at the same time. I thought mine was normal, but maybe a previous owner removed the return spring (god bless em if they did!)

When I close the bonnet, I just shut it and then return the lever to the closed position to lock it shut.

There's a major earthing point, from memory, that bolts on the chassis somewhere near the starter motor. Take it off, clean it thoroughly with a bit of sandpaper then cost the connections with electrical grease and bolt it back on firmly. That should help with restarts - I had same problem and cleaning up the earth points makes a huge difference to electrical stability.

I almost bought an upgraded starter, but no longer need it.
