Looking at these two threads it appears that national pride has vanished
So why is the UK so utterly convinced we are s
t at everything and utterly doomed?

t, there's no 2 ways about it.Ok. Look at it this way..
Austin. Gone
Austin Healey. Gone
AC. Gone
Bentley. Now owned by das Germans
Bristol. Gone
Jaguar. Now owned by the Indians
Land Rover. Now owned by the Indians
Range Rover. Now owned by the Indians.
Lotus. Owned by many different people over the years.
TVR. Gone
Rover. Now owned by the Chinese
Marcos. Gone
Rolls Royce. Now owned by das Germans.
Alvis, Armstrong Siddeley, Austin, Autovia, Dawson, DeLorean, Gilbern, Gordon-Keeble, Healey, Hillman, Humber, Jensen, Jowett, Lanchester, Lea-Francis, Morris, Napier, Reliant, Riley, Singer, Standard, Sterling, Sunbeam, Sunbeam-Talbot, Talbot, Triumph, Vanden Plas, Wolseley.
Yep, you've guessed it. They've gone too.
Ok. So manufacturing. Dyson upped sticks and moved his manufacturing abroad because it was too expensive to manufacture in the UK.
Ship building. Where's that gone? Yep, that's right. It's cheaper to have ships built abroad.
Aero Industry? That's essentially shut up shop and moved abroad.
I'll give you the fact that a large proportion of F1 teams are based in the UK and their cars are manufactured here. McLaren could be a success story with the MP4 12C.
It's a dreary, miserable looking day. What's to celebrate

BMW: would not have existed without the British and the Austin 7
VW: would not have survived were it not for the British
Where would countless foreign manufacturers be without the quiet engineering work done by Lotus, MIRA etc
Where would WORLD motorsport be without the UK?? Some dangerous backwater sport with the same level of interest as powerboat racing...
Andyour point about the aircraft industry conveniently forgets Rolls Royce in Derby...
The UK manufacturing plants are some of the best, most effecient in the world.
We may not have much large scale manufacturing anymore. But we still show the world how to make things.

How can you have national pride in something that avoids mentioning which nation is involved? http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Our steel industry? Owned by Indians
It just seems that everything we do is taken over by the arty-farty, Green, PC apollogists and becomes embarrasingly s

All valid points for and against.
My point is very simple.
In the old days very few could afford the products. In the recent past our cost was too high and our markets were too small.
Today, we have the technology, the design, the workers, the investment, the management and most importantly...we have new markets. If there is to be a pro british attitude..it is now!

If we all stopped saying how f
king useless and s
t we are then just maybe we might still have all of the aboveThere is far too much negativity in the UK. Far too much sitting around complaining and too little getting on with improving matters.
The UK is a very major player and has a great deal to be proud of and to build on yet a large number of people and media would prefer to ignore the good bits, complain about the bad bits and convince themselves decline is an inevitability.
Even more disappointing for me is that a good portion of this negativity comes from sections of society who are in pretty good positions themselves, relatively speaking.
The UK could be an awful lot worse.

t posters? I think the opposite is true. People know that we can do far better than that. If people said that the posters looked ok, I'd worry.I just tried to look it up and while i thought it was in the last year or two i may be wrong and it may be in the last year or two that we exported most...slight misremembering of the facts. I do agree with the point that none of the companies are british owned. Ford though produce all their european diesel engines in this country and most of their world engine here.
Manufacturing isn't sunk and we actually pretty damn good, we just don't want to believe it.
