Three separate individuals, two colleagues and a mate have VAG 2.0 Tdi's (two A4's and a Passat), they marvel at the fuel economy, sometimes over 50 mpg but I regulalrly hear them saying that the oil light has come on and they have had to top it up, they all scour the place like junkies for cheap VAG Spec oil as its specific and pretty pricey and then top the engines up.

Do VAG diesels actually do about 35 mpg but use the engine oil as a source of fuel to get 50 ? biggrin

I'll be they're not run in yet. Up to about 50,000 miles those engines want oil tops ups quite a lot, then the need disappears. My two TDi PDs have not need a drop of top up between services since around that mileage.

Modern cars do use oil - and as an Engineering Professor I know will insist, it's good that they do - show's it's being used(?)

The worst I had was the V8 in my ML which would use 2l per month. I got them to check, but the engine is designed to use a litre every 1,000km!!!

My 330i used about a litre between every service (14-16,000). So far the GT has used 10% of the drop from Max to Min - which will be about 150ml in 14,000.

My wife's (petrol) Mini Cooper S has a bit of an oil thirst too, uses a litre every 3k miles or thereabouts. Mini tell me this is perfect normal though.

My old Golf TDi used to need about a litre between services too.

I can't be far off a litre every 600 miles with my 330.

At least Asda do cheap Castrol...

If that was where the oil was going, surely the RX8 wouldn't use any petrol at all? hehe

I like your thinking!

But I must admit, even though we have a 2.0 TD in our household, I am sick to the back teeth of people blithering on about diesel economy.

There was some bloke on a different site blithering on about how he gets an AVERAGE of 62 MPG out of his 118d. Aw come on, not on your nelly mate! And then there are the ones who claim 50 MPG out of their 335d (or was it a 330d?) either way, maybe when you were drafting down a hill behind a truck....

I tend to switch off when people go on about diesel MPG these days.

I haven't checked my oil for 6 months, and the light isn't on, I can assume from this either my car is not using oil or the oil light is broken.

My old man averages 63mpg in his 52-plate 320d - so I can believe 62 from a 118d.

For god sake don't tell doogz or mgmrw. You should be dismatling your car weekly and drinking a quart of oil to test it as part of a routine weekly check.

You are lucky to be alive. wink

Come to think of it, this goes with my dad's Fabia 1.9 PD; I think last had to top it up at about 60,000 but not had to do it since. Why is that??

Really? Averages this on a tankfull? Including start up, driving around and stopping? Or is this the maximum figure achieved on a journey?

Either way, it must be painful to say the least.....

I can only imagine that the oil is getting broken down by extreme temperature hot-spots caused by friction, which drops off as the engine "wears in"?

Oh this is tank after tank after tank after tank - calculated using a little notebook in his drivers side pocket.

He is 68 and drives like a 70s taxi driver thought....but it does include a reasonable about of time towing a caravan too.

I think I would lose the will to live at that point. Sometimes, you really can be a little too "thrifty"....

Can't believe this - perhaps if it was a new ED, but a nearly 10 year old 320d doing 63mpg, whilst often towing a caravan? Bearing in mind the official mpg figure is 49, doing 63mpg over a tank would mean he can do just under 900 miles between filling up?

Have you checked the accuracy of his odometer? It hasn't switched to kilometers without him noticing has it? smile
