Very good Lidl cheapie red.

I like their cheap reds, their £3.79p Cote du Rhone is a bargain, and none too shabby.

But they were out of stock, so I picked up a couple of bottles of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2010 at £3.39p a bottle.

It is very, very good.

£3.39p, that's THREE POUNDS THIRTY NINE PENCE!!!

They were criticised in Ireland for selling two bottles of the stuff for 5 Euros, the duty alone is 2.72 a bottle.

I can only imagine these decent enough but really cheap wines are a loss leader.

It's good stuff. In fact, quite a lot of the Lidl wines are good stuff. We drink them regularly.

(Just about my only grumble with Lidl wines is that they don't provide a wine carrier to take them home in. But, given this is PH, I ensure it is my butler's problem and don't worry about it!)

And it's not too good either.

First glass was very sweet and slightly effervescent, but this is supposed to be a dry red. The second glass was a touch better. It's not going down the sink, as it's washing down some Salami and Rye bread. But I don't recommend it.

I've made the trip and have a bottle of the cheap red to taste.

My verdict? Not bad - it needs a bit of aeration but is certainly not the worst wine I've drunk, and far better than most supermarket offerings at the <£5 price point.

I also picked up a bottle of the Cotes du Rhone for £3.69, an 8-roll pack of Bounty kitchen towels for £3.99, and a pot of moisturiser I've heard good things about for £1.99. Even if I try it and think it's crap, it was only £1.99.

Moreover, the Leatherhead store was remarkably 3.142key-free. Pensioner-infested, with much faffing about at the checkout resulting, but no 3.142keys. Fruit and veg all looked good, as did the Christmas stuff - lots of German things like stollen, pfefferkuchen etc.

Thats what our local one is like, we have a little Tesco, and a Lidl, and its usually the Tesco full of the pie-keys

I do not know if it is just the various Lidls round here, but I go to Lidl a lot and see very few skanky types. There are certainly more per capita in my local Asda.

Quite a lot of East Europeans seem to shop there.

Anything specifically for the UK market will probably be st. Otherwise it's great.

My local Asda is full of skanks. In fact, it's where I shop if I'm feeling skanky.

I'm surprised there aren't more skanks in Lidl - in theory keen prices should attract them.

However, thinking back to my days in advertising, I did some research for P&G where we found that consumers in the C2DE socioeconomic groups were paradoxically more likely to seek the security of well-known brands than ABC1s.

You'd think it would be the other way round with ABC1s prepared to pay premium prices for branded goods, yet it isn't.

I'd only ever been to Lidl once before, at New Year when understandably the choice of fresh stuff wasn't great.

I probably wouldn't do a weekly shop at Lidl, but for bargain hunts it's great.

True of all sensible price red wine: I try to decant/open breathe the wine for at least 2 hours better still 24.

Makes a huge difference.

Interstingly I have had odd half bottles open for weeks and weeks.

Never has a bottle go off or become corked.

Presumably its the metabisulphate preservative being very effective.

A recent discovery for us in South Yorkshire is Home Bargains. Great for crisps, tinned tomatoes, stocks, herbs and toilet roll.

what would you regard as rubbish then? Obviously taking price into account.

I have used Lidl since before it came to England and I will stand by the belief that they will not sell rubbish. And please bear in mind I am talking proper rubbish.

Their pre-packed ham is good, lasagne will not be beat at the price, bacon is delicious, cheese is wonderful, pies are great, scotch eggs acceptable, cereals loved by kids....
