Looking around for a new car, i loved the idea of the 645 but i just couldnt justify spending that sort of money on a car which will spend much of its time in town, traffic or on a dual carraigeway behind one lorry overtaking another one. Wouldnt get enough opportunities to use what its got to give so it'd be wasted anyway.

Ive decided to switch my attention to a spot of shedding instead im looking at a V reg 75 2.5 V6 Automatic in Club trim, got 74k on it, FSH and an MOT. Going to see it on Saturday if its not gone by then and its at £995. Are these cars worth a look and is there anything specific i need to be aware of? I want something reasonably big, automatic, comfortable but with enough grunt to get somewhere reasonably quickly if needed. On a V reg it avoids a £455 tax disc which is a bonus.

Thoughts?

I can almost feel the laughing already...

If you like the retro looks and retro interior, they are pretty good for the money.

However as has been mentioned, the cambelt on the v6 is a complex job requiring specialist tools - so keep that in mind. However for less than a grand, I wouldnt bother with the cambelt myself...

Very very good cars and a lovely engine.

A good friend has had 2 75 V6's, both bought new and still has one. As far as I know the only issue he's had was with one of the alarm key fobs.

Not the most speedy and not a Jag in terms of interior and refinement, but a true cut above offerings from Ford, Vauxhall, Renault, etc.

Which is no different for any other V6 car of this money.

very good cars, cambelts + water pump + thermostat (plastic and does leak) will be around £700 from an independent like lates600 (google him) main other problems are early 2 speed fans have a tendency to fail, vis motors go , plenum drains need cleaning regularly otherwise they fill up and drown the ecu..
good cars all the same, loads of waftability and comfort for the price!!

Get a Connoisseur spec, you can afford to be choosey and there's negligible price difference s/h.

The is a lower power V6 as well as the 180hp model iirc, the slower one is no more economical so I'd avoid it.

Rover specced the cambelt to 150k miles but wanted to be on the safe side so set the change interval at a conservative 90k. Obviously age is also a factor you need to take into account with the belt but they are not known for failing early.

Basically decent cars and a well looked after one should be OK. They have their common issues (a lot shared with BMW's of the same era) and are all getting on a bit but a nice one is a good value shed.

Ive looked at a couple of Connoisseur spec ones but they've been pretty high mileage rotboxes, with its cream interior it shows up wear really easily i think. I'll keep an eye out obviously, i did see one with the 2.0 CDT engine but having never owned a diesel i dont know if i'd like it and ive met a few people with diesel auto's who say the 'diesel auto whine' drives them mad. Whatever that is.

I had £13k sat aside if a top notch 645 came up which took my fancy but i just didnt see the point in spending it so its not like im going to fuss over a few hundred quid with the 75s if it means getting a significantly better car. The way i see it is £12k can buy a lot of petrol, servicing, insurance, maintenance etc over a long period of time. Insurance was a bit surprising, cheapest quote is £535 which is near enough what i got quoted on the BMW 645. Not sure what a dealer would give on a T reg Mondeo zetec against it, little more than £200 i'd guess.

Ive been looking at cars for ages and thought 'well i could invest a few grand in a nice newish economical Fiesta which will hold value well' and then i thought fk it i'll get a V6 before the EU bans them or some such.

Thanks for the pointers i'll see if it has any paperwork worth reading with it.

To be honest for a bit of barging with that budget I'd have a Jag XJ all day long.

Rotboxes, i.e. rusty ? never heard of one rusting, not badly anyway.

They stayed true to the concept though, will give them that,

The dials on the 75 are very similar but do mph, not years.

I quite like them, they will be dying off like mad now though, my mum and dad have a |T ach and they drive well, are well built and look a lot less twee.

'03 Jag XJ6 Auto with 40k miles, warranty, black leather and all the toys. £9k with plenty of wiggle room I would suggest.

Not particularly rusty just looking very worn down, very high miles on them. Im not particularly but off by high mileage if the car looks in super condition.

Lots of cars like this will be scrapped in favour of a diesel Kia so i thought i'd get in now.

I love Jags, my father's had more Jags than John Prescott, i fear it may show a lack of imagination if i buy one as well though laugh

If i wanted to push the boat out and splash some cash there is a lovely VW Phaeton 3.2 for sale not far from here for around 6k. Hmmmmmm....overkill?

So only ten times more expensive than the car the OP is looking at then?

^ this ^

Need to be changed every 90k / 6 years, whatever comes first. A lot of people don't bother changing them, but of course this can have bad consequences... if it were me I'd be looking for something which has already had it done (and receipts showing it are a must!)

The 75 has the 2.5 & 2.0 V6, but the 2.0 V6 was replaced with a 1.8T.

Do you bother actually reading the posts in a thread before responding?
