That's great. I've always thought that if I get to a stage where I've a big enough rainy day fund going begging, I'd do something like this for my dad - an old 1979 Merc SL (I doubt I'd spend 5 years looking for the exact original though).

I dread to think how much they ended up paying for a pristine, numbers matching example of the most desirable year of Impala, with a manual gearbox. They obviously love their dad a lot.

caused me to look for one of my grandad's old bikes on the net, no such luck I'm afraid. If I were to chase my parent's old cars (a series of morris minors and austins) then I'd have to start melting down washing machines etc because they literally kept them until they were scrap
ETA: My grandad also had an rs2000, which was in ste condition when he sold it and is now apparently in concours condition in australia. no chance of me buying that back for my mum
anyone considered similar jaunts?

On another note if I did this for my father (if he was still alive, love you Dad!) "Hillman Hunter" just hasn't got the same ring to it as a Chevy Impala.

Thanks for the link, I loved it watched it twice. Back in 2003 I found a 66 Chev Impala which I bought as a bit of fun for my 2 small children at the time (and for me), something they would always remember, Dad with this crazy orange noisy car that everyone looked at. Unfortately the economics of restoration meant after some 6 years I decided to move it on but we had some great fun with it, it was loved by the children and will never be forgotten. Its gone to a guy who wants to restore it, so in a good home. Here is a pic of it, I have posted it before.

That's what it's like to be a true enthusiast. He nearly gave his Dad a heart attack, you can see how much he loved / loves that car. I'm pretty sure his son knows what it's like to be bitten by the car bug and must have enjoyed the car just as much when he was younger. Great story. Now, better phone pops
