£4k budget, interesting engine required.
Discussion
Although not strictly for myself my mate is in the hunt for a new car, requirements are that it be an enjoyable drive and have a corking engine.
Surprisingly an Alfa will not be considered so that will rule out a lot of replies!
I've suggested so far a BMW 540, he has come up with an Impreza.
He is currently driving around in an '04 Disco TD5 but he does have a V8 Bowler-style Wildcat for fun duties!

Focus ST170?
He said interesting engine

I test drove one of these, didn't like it and much preferred the extra shove of the ST24.
As for the OP, a good Accord Type R maybe? Or something with a massive V8, might be able to get a Trans Am or similar for that money if you are good with spanners and look hard enough?

£4k would get to a wankel powered RX-8 or even a turbo'd FD RX-7. Reckon they are quite interesting.
Or you could opt for a Jaguar XJS/XJ12 with the 5.3 or 6.0 litre SOHC V12 engine. Again rather interesting.
£4k should also just about nab you an L98 Crossfire injection Corvette with 5.7 litres and 8 cylinders.
A DC2 with it's B18 VTEC unit is fairly fancy too.
Jaguar XJR6, 4.0 litre DOHC straight 6 with an Eaton Roots M90 supercharger.

I've tried to persuade him with Jaguar loveliness but he isn't feeling the "old man" love.

Pretty much anything other than a 2.0 or VAG 1.8T!
